BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Coming off an impressive 92-78 home opening triumph over Rider, the Lehigh men's basketball team hits the road for five straight beginning on Friday at Fordham. Tipoff in the Rose Hill Gymnasium is set for 7 p.m. and will air live on SNY in the state of New York. The game begins a busy weekend for the Mountain Hawks, who head to Houston on Sunday to face the Cougars at 2 p.m. ET.
Â
Lehigh stormed out to an 18-2 lead over Rider on Tuesday and never trailed on its way to the 14-point win over a Broncs squad that won 19 games a season ago. Four Mountain Hawks scored double-figure points, led by freshman Austin Price who had 21, this after scoring 15 at Minnesota to earn Patriot League Rookie of the Week honors. For perspective, Price's 36 points through two career games are more than Lehigh's second all-time leading scorer and current NBA player C.J. McCollum who had 25. Mike Polaha, who is third in school history for points, had 20. The program's all-time leader in points Daren Queenan scored 40 through his first two collegiate games.
Â
Sophomore Jesse Chuku had 18 points on Tuesday behind a perfect 4-of-4 from three-point range. Freshman Tim Kempton had 16 while senior Mackey McKnight posted his first-career double-double with 14 points and a career-high 10 assists. It marked Lehigh's first double-double in points and assists since Marquis Hall had 12 points and 10 assists on Nov. 16, 2009 (also against Rider).
Â
The Mountain Hawks are eying their third straight win over Fordham from the Atlantic 10. Lehigh is 12-48 all-time against current members of the Atlantic 10, owning wins over Fordham, George Washington and La Salle. The Mountain Hawks have played Fordham the most out of all the current members of the A-10. Friday will be a homecoming for junior Conroy Baltimore who is a Bronx, N.Y. native.
Â
With a win, the Mountain Hawks would be 2-1 after three games for the first time since the 2008-09 season when they defeated Saint Peter's and Delaware State before falling to Rider.
Â
Tuesday's home opener was historic, as Lehigh's 92 points marked Lehigh's most in a home opener since Nov. 26, 1994, a 105-89 win over Cornell. The Mountain Hawks finished 59 percent from the field (30-of-51) and 61 percent from three-point range (14-of-23). Chuku was 4-of-4 while Price knocked down 5-of-10 from long distance. The 14 made threes were just one from tying the Stabler Arena record. The 61 percentage from long range marked Lehigh's highest since the Patriot League semifinals against American on Mar. 7, 2010 when the team hit on a 62 percent clip (8-of-13).
Â
Lehigh and Fordham will meet for the 22nd time on Friday, with many of the matchups coming during Fordham's days in the Patriot League. The Rams hold a 12-9 lead all-time. The Mountain Hawks defeated the Fordham in 2011 for the first time since 1995 and beat the Rams last season as well, 81-63. Fordham won six straight from 1991-92 through the 1993-94 season. Lehigh won the first four all-time meetings (beginning in 1913-14) and four of the first five.
Â
Out of a strong Atlantic 10 conference, Fordham owns a 1-1 record with a win over Saint Francis (Pa.) and loss to Syracuse. Freshman Jon Severe has impressed averaging 23.5 points while senior Branden Frazier is second with 21.5 points and six rebounds. Mandell Thomas has posted 12.5 points and 7.5 rebounds. The Rams' three-point field goal defense has been strong as opponents are shooting just 19 percent from long distance through two games.
Â
The Mountain Hawks head to the University of Houston on Sunday for a 2 p.m. ET game on ESPN3.
