BETHLEHEM, Pa - The Lehigh field hockey team heads to central New York this weekend where it will face Patriot League foe Colgate on Saturday before a nonleague tilt at Cornell Sunday. Both games are set for 1 p.m. The Mountain Hawks look to get back into the league tournament race.
Â
Lehigh began last weekend with a loss to Boston University before responding with an exciting 2-1 win over Lock Haven.
Â
The Terriers jumped out to a 3-0 second half lead, but the Mountain Hawks wouldn't go away. Freshman Marissa Glatt scored Lehigh's only goal of the game at the 68:47 mark. Glatt is tied for the Patriot League lead in goals (10) and points (21).
Â
Entering with a 10-3 record, Lock Haven scored the game's first goal just 11 minutes into Sunday's game, but Lehigh quickly responded just six minutes later with a goal from senior Caitlyn Mitchell. The teams played to a stalemate for the next 50 minutes, with both goalies playing well. Lehigh freshman Julia Ward posted nine saves, earning her the Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Week. She made 17 saves a day prior against the Terriers.
Â
With less than five minutes remaining, sophomore Zoey Pacheco scored her first-career goal which stood as the game-winner. Final shots were 17-9 in favor of Lock Haven while each team had seven penalty corners. The Bald Eagles' losses have come to nationally-ranked North Carolina and Penn State, along with Saint Francis (Pa.) and now Lehigh.
Â
Colgate is coming off two close defeats to Cornell (3-2) and Columbia (4-3) in overtime. The Raiders are currently 2-11 overall with a 0-3 record in league play. Junior Eliana Brown is tied for the league lead (with Glatt) in both goals (10) and points (21). She is closely followed by senior Halle Biggar who has eight goals and has one assist. Much like Lehigh, Colgate has been extremely close all season. Nine of the Raiders' 11 losses have come by a single goal including a slim 2-1 loss to Boston University and 3-2 defeat to American. Saturday is their Senior Day.
Â
The Raiders lead the all-time series, 17-13-1. The teams have alternated wins the last nine seasons. Lehigh has won four of those (all at home). The Mountain Hawks haven't won at Colgate since 1996, dropping eight straight in Hamilton, N.Y.
Â
Cornell enters the weekend riding a three-game winning streak. Last week, the Big Red beat both Colgate (3-2) and Saint Josephs (4-2). The Big Red will host Harvard on Saturday before facing the Mountain Hawks on Sunday. Katie Weeks leads Cornell with 15 points on the season behind six goals and three assists. Elly Plappert has 13 points behind five goals and three assists. Plappert had an impressive performance against Saint Joe's, recording a goal and assist, while Weeks also scored a goal.
Â
Cornell leads the all-time series 19-1-1. The first meeting came in 1991 while Lehigh's lone win was in 1993 by a 2-1 final.
Â
Following the weekend, Lehigh closes the regular season with a pair of games against Patriot League opponents. First, the Mountain Hawks head to Holy Cross (Oct. 26) before hosting American (Nov. 2) on Senior Day. That game will air live on the Patriot League Digital Network.
