BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh men's cross country team will send part of the team to Princeton, N.J. to compete in the Princeton Invitational, while other runners will head to Easton to partake in the Lafayette Invitational. Both meets will take place on Saturday, and will serve as the final races before the Patriot League Championships take place on Nov. 2.
The Mountain Hawks are coming off a 24th place finish at the Paul Short Run, which was capped off by a star performance from senior captain Tyler Mueller. Mueller raced to a new personal record of 23:58 to give him an impressive sixth place finish in the Men's College Gold 8K. His finish was the highest in school history since 1976 when a Lehigh runner placed fourth.
Mueller is joined by junior Ryan Mahalsky who has also seen his share of success so far this season. Mahalsky won his first ever collegiate race in the 2013 Lehigh Invitational and finished in 49th place at the 2013 Paul Short Run with a time of 24:49.
Other Lehigh runners that have seen success this season include sophomore Sean Burke and juniors Simon Voorhees, Casey Gilboy and Nick Ward. Freshman Alex Fitzgerald has impressed in his first season as a Mountain Hawk, capturing Patriot League Rookie of the Week honors for his sixth place finish at the Lehigh-Lafayette dual.
While the 24th place finish at the Paul Short Run may not be as high as the Mountain Hawks had hoped, Lehigh has had some impressive races so far this season. The Mountain Hawks won the 2013 Lehigh Invitational and toppled rival Lafayette for the 15th straight year at the annual Lehigh-Lafayette dual.
Following the trips to Princeton and Lafayette, the Mountain Hawks will begin preparations to defend their title at the 2013 Patriot League Championships. The race will take place on Nov. 2 on Lafayette's course.
Full results from Saturday's meets will be posted on Lehighsports.com at the conclusion of the events.
