Mountain Hawks stellar at Penn Relays, Lehigh Games

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh men's track and field team shined over the weekend as the Mountain Hawks competed in the prestigious Penn Relays and then hosted the Lehigh Games on Goodman Campus. There were many stellar performances highlighted by Evans Kosgei's run in the 5000m Championship Race at the Penn Relays where he broke a 36-year-old school record.
Kosgei placed 10th in the event with a time of 14:10.3, surpassing the previous school record of 14:12.44 which was set by Wayne Rogers in 1976. Kosge's time also qualified him for the IC4A Championships which will be in two weeks in Princeton, N.J.
 
"Evans' performance breaking that record is the standout performance of the weekend," said head coach Matt Utesch. "Everyone is picking it up and bringing a little extra every weekend and that's great to see."
 
Sophomores Jimmy Miller (14:31.26) and Tyler Mueller (14:38.22) also had standout performances in the 5000m College race at the Penn Relays as the duo placed sixth and 13th respectively. Miller's time qualified him for the IC4A Championships while Mueller was just a few seconds off.
 
At the Lehigh games, the Mountain Hawks dominated, winning nine events.  
 
Seth Robinson had a stellar meet, winning a pair of events. He won the 110m hurdles with a time of 15.14 and then came back and won the 400m hurdles with a time of 54.73.
 
Lehigh swept the 400m dash as Martin Otieno won the event with a time of 50.19 while Devin Monroe placed second and John Ciavardelli took third.
 
Lehigh also swept the long jump. Patrick Ciez won the event with a distance of 6.71m while Alexander Maurer (6.59m) was second and Kyle Forrest (6.25m) was third.
 
Joseph Prestifilippo won the 5000m run with a time of 16:01.01 while Ryan Knouse placed fourth in the event with a time of 16:18.93.
 
Daniel Soltan won the 3000m steeplechase with a time of 9:44.98.
 
Lehigh took the top two spots in the pole vault as Donald Scatena won the event with a distance of 14-00 while Kyle Forrest was right behind him with a distance of 13-06.
 
Stephen Tutunjian won the triple jump with a distance of 14.22m.
 
In the discus throw, Benjamin Sourbeer won the event with a distance of 45.81m. Ricky Okoye placed fourth with a distance 44.23m while Benjamin Beauchamp was sixth with a distance of 43.00m.
 
In the hammer throw, three Mountain Hawks placed second through fourth. Christopher Buck took second with a distance of 50.63m, just 0.35m behind first. Beauchamp (46.14m) was second and Joseph Gianndrea (45.87m) was third.
 
Lehigh again took the two through four spots in the 800m run. Christopher Watson placed second with a time of 1:56.20 while Gregory Caldwell was third (1:56.74) and Mitchell Biler was fourth (1:56.90).
 
Ifeanyi Edochie placed third in the 200m dash with a time of 23.31.
 
In the 1500m run, Nick Molloy placed fourth with a time of 4:03.27, a personal record. Three other Mountain Hawks placed in the Top 10 in the event as Ryan Mahalsky was seventh (4:05.90), Casey GIlboy was eighth (4.06.43) and Russell Vignali was tenth (4:06.57).
 
Adeolu Adesida tied for third in the high jump with a distance of 1.90m.
 
Lehigh will look to use the momentum from its successful past few weekends as the Mountain Hawks will turn its attention to the Patriot League Championships next weekend in Worcester, Mass. with competition set for Friday, May 4 and Saturday May 5.
 
"It's a great weekend going into the Patriot League Championships," Utesch said. "We are firing on all cylinders. I think we are really ready to go and I'm looking forward to it."
