PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Lehigh men's track and field team opened up its spring season Saturday with some impressive performances at the Big 5 Invitational, hosted by Penn. Ricky Okoye won the discus throw with an IC4A-qualfying distance of 45.72m while Donald Scatena took home his first collegiate victory as he placed first in the pole vault with a distance of 4.40m.

“The throwers are the story of the meet,” said head coach Matt Utesch. “We didn't have everyone in the meet, happy where we are out, overall pretty good meet. We have been pounding through the training and the meet is clearly our season opener, but there is a lot to build on.”

Lehigh also had three second-place finishes. Michael Lunemann took second in the pole vault behind Scatena with a distance of 3.95m. Christopher Buck was second in the shot put with a distance of 13.90m while Benjamin Beauchamp took third (13.09m) and Zachary Nardone (13.03m) was fourth in the event. Simon Voorhees was the third Mountain Hawk to place second as he did so in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 15:14.61. Ryan Mahalsky took fourth (15:18.87) and Russell Vignali was sixth (15:24.86).

Joseph Giaandrea placed third in the hammer throw with a distance of 45.90m while Buck was fourth with a distance of 43.87m. Seth Robinson took fourth in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 15.47.

Along with his victory, Okoye also place third in the javelin throw with a distance of 56.41m.

Lehigh will next split up as a group of Mountain Hawks will compete next weekend in the ASICS Winthrop Invitational and another group will compete in the Lafayette 7 Way.
