Lehigh excels in tune up prior to Championships

NEW YORK, N.Y. – In its final meet before the Patriot League Championships, the Lehigh men's track and field team had some positive results at the Lafayette/Rider Invitational at the NYC Armory. The Mountain Hawks had an impressive 17 top 10 finishes highlighted by a fifth-place finish in the 500m dash by sophomore John Ciavardelli and a fifth place in the high jump by freshman Adeolu Adesida.
The meet was a great tune up for Lehigh as the Mountain Hawks get set to compete in the Patriot League Championships next weekend in Lewisburg, Pa.
“I was very happy with our performance,” said head coach Matt Utesch. “There were some great individual performances and efforts and that's all you can ask for every time out. I think this gives us some confidence going into the Championships and hopefully we can use the momentum to our advantage.”
At the Invitational, Lehigh faced some stellar competition such as Connecticut, UMBC, fellow Patriot League teams Army and Lafayette, Rhode Island, Delaware and Rider.
Ciavardelli crossed the finish line in fifth with a time of 1:05.93 while Adesida's distance in the high jump was 1.99m. Adesida also finished ninth in the triple jump with a distance of 12.62m.
Sophomore Seth Robinson placed sixth in the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.44 while sophomore Ryan Paquin took sixth in the long jump with a distance of 6.57m. Senior Alexander Maurer finished two spots behind Paquin in the long jump with a distance of 6.47m.
Lehigh had an impressive showing in the one mile run as the Mountain Hawks placed four runners in the top 10. Sophomore Sam Bernitt led the way finishing fifth with a time of 4:12.93 while senior Evan Flach (4:12.99), freshman Simon Voorhees (4:18.65) and freshman Stephen Keith (4:18.70) placed sixth through eighth, respectively.
Then in the 5,000 meter-run freshman Ryan Mahalsky placed seventh with a time of 15:18.13 while freshman Casey Gilboy was 10th with a time of 15:33.82.
Junior Devin Monroe took seventh in the 400m dash with a time of 49.61 and freshman Gregory Caldwell was eighth in the 1,000-meter run with a time of 2:31.71. In the 3,000-meter run, freshman Nicholas Ward placed 10th with a time of 8:43.19, finishing ahead of a pair of Army runners.
Freshman Donald Scatena was 10th in the pole vault with a distance of 4.20m and sophomore Benjamin Beauchamp was 10th in the weight throw with a distance of 15.38m.
The Mountain Hawks will now be gearing up for the biggest meet of the season – the Patriot League Championships. Hosted by Bucknell, the Championships will take place starting at noon on Friday and end on Sunday. Lehigh will be looking to improve upon its fourth place finish at last year's Championships.
