NEWARK, N.J. – In its final action of the fall semester the Lehigh men's swimming and diving team defeated NJIT 142-63 at the Fleisher Athletic Center. Senior Will Dearden and freshman Jacob Hassel were double winners on the day as the Mountain Hawks won eight of 11 events to head into the semester break at 3-1.

“NJIT is a much improved team but our team was still able to control the meet as evidenced by our 1-2-3 finishes in the IM and backstroke events,” said Lehigh head coach Rob Herb. “As a team we have not been this strong in season for some time.”

The Highlanders' only three victories came in the sprint freestyle events, where Lehigh's top three swimmers did not compete. Instead, senior Frank Cuzzola and juniors Demetri Karedis and Chris Hoke competed at the USA Swimming AT&T Winter Nationals in Austin, Texas.

Dearden led Lehigh in the distance freestyle events, winning the 1650 freestyle in 16:53.62 and then leading a top three Lehigh sweep in the 500 free with a time of 4:58.20.

Hassel led 1-2 finishes from freshmen in the 100 fly and 100 breast, winning the 100 fly at 52.94 with Jeff Donovin finishing second. In the 100 breast, Hassel posted a time of 1:00.80 with freshman Michael Lopinto finishing second.

Sophomore Jake Greene led a sweep in the 400 individual medley with a time of 4:21.96, with sophomores Michael Wheaton and Sean Brant finishing second and third respectively. Brant led a sweep in the 100 back with a time of 53.81 followed by freshman Matt Carducci and sophomore Danny Bennett.

Lehigh also won both relay events on the day. Brant, Lopinto, Donovin and junior Matt Chrzanowski teamed to take the 200 medley relay in 1:39.62, while the Mountain Hawks had the top three teams in the 200 free relay. Freshman Sean Daugherty, sophomore Connor Cackovic, Bennett and Carducci took first place with a time of 1:31.18.

The Mountain Hawks will now be off until Friday, January 11 when they return to Jacobs Pool to host Patriot League rival Army at 5 p.m.
