Lehigh keeps rolling with 202-98 home win over Marist

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – In their first meet of 2012 Lehigh's men's swimming and diving team moved to 7-0 on the season with a commanding 202-98 win over Marist Saturday at Jacobs Pool. The Mountain Hawks won 13 of 16 events, with senior Kevin Shoemaker winning three individual events to lead Lehigh to its third straight win over the Red Foxes.
 
“Our men had a hard week of training and the work paid off with a strong showing today,” said Lehigh head coach Rob Herb.
 
Shoemaker continued to excel in the butterfly and individual medley events, to post three of Lehigh's 13 event wins. He opened by taking the 200 fly in 1:53.77 and followed with a 52.08 time in taking the 100. In the last individual event of the meet, Shoemaker won the 200 IM in 1:57.60.
 
Junior Alex Aboud added two wins, taking the 100 yard breaststroke in 1:00.48 and the 200 in 2:12.36. Junior Frank Cuzzola led a 1-2 Lehigh finish in the 200 free, edging Chris Toth for top honors in 1:46.69. In the 50 free it was sophomore Chris Hoke holding off classmate Demetri Karedis to win in 21.47 seconds. Karedis bounced back to win the 100 free in 47.73. Toth also followed up on his runner-up finish in the 200 free by leading a top three sweep in the 500 free. Toth posted a time of 4:48.60 with freshmen Danny Bennett and Jake Greene following up in second and third place. Bennett and Greene took the top two spots in the 1000 free, with Bennett taking the victory in 9:58.69.
 
The Mountain Hawks also took both relay events. In the 200 medley relay freshman Martin Kending teamed with Hoke, Shoemaker and Karedis to lead a top-two Lehigh finish in 1:36.82. Lehigh swept the top three spots in the 400 free relay, with Cuzzola, Hoke, junior Angelo DiGiacinto and Karedis posting a time of 3:13.43.
 
Senior Connor Styles picked up Lehigh's lone win on the diving boards, taking the one meter in 282.52.
The Mountain Hawks will return to action on Friday January 13 when they square off against Patriot League rival Army. The meet is slated for a 6 p.m. start from Crandall Pool.
