WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Lehigh men's swimming and diving team suffered its first dual meet loss of the season Friday evening as the Mountain Hawks fell 167.5-127.5 to Army Friday night at Crandall Pool. The Mountain Hawks won five events and split top honors in a sixth, but Army continued its dominance of the all-time series, with the victory.
Bennett captured both the 1000 and 500 yard freestyle events to score 18 points for Lehigh. Bennett took the 1000 in 9:45.99 and the 500 in 4:43.08. Senior Chris Toth finished second to Bennett in the 500.
Sophomore Chris Hoke also had a strong evening, leading Lehigh to a top three sweep in the 50 free. Hoke posted a time of 21.32 seconds while Demetri Karedis finished second in 21.45 and Frank Cuzzola finished third. Hoke also tied for first in the 100 free with Army's William McCarty with both men touching the wall in 47.69.
Army clinched the meet with two events remaining but that did not stop Lehigh from posting the top times in the final two events. Senior Kevin Shoemaker led the way in the 200 yard individual medley with a time of 1:58.69, while in the 200 free relay Karedis, Hoke, Cuzzola and freshman Martin Kendig teamed for a time of 1:24.12.
The Mountain Hawks will return to the pool next Saturday for their final home meet of the season when Lehigh hosts Bucknell. The meet is slated for a 1 p.m. start from Jacobs Pool.
