BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Accolades continue to roll in for junior C.J. McCollum as he was named Patriot League Player of the Week on Tuesday, just one day after garnering recognition from two different media outlets. It marks McCollum's eighth-career Player of the Week award to tie a Patriot League record. He finished a stellar week with 56 points, 16 rebounds and seven assists over wins at Saint Peter's and Bryant.
On Monday, McCollum was named CollegeHoops.net's national Mid-Major Player of the Week, while he also garnered College Sports Madness' Patriot League Player of the Week.
Tuesday's honor gives McCollum eight Patriot League Player of the Week honors in his career, joining Colgate's Adonal Foyle (1994-97), Lafayette's Brian Ehlers (1996-00) and American's Garrison Carr (2005-09) and Vlad Moldoveanu (2009-11) for most in league history. McCollum has 17 all-time Patriot League weekly awards, which include a record-tying nine Rookie of the Week honors as a freshman.
The Canton, Ohio native has helped Lehigh up its record to 11-4, setting a new school mark for nonleague wins in a season. He began on Wednesday with his 14th-career double-double, posting 22 points and 11 rebounds in a 76-67 victory at defending MAAC Champion Saint Peter's. He led the team in points, rebounds and assists (5) against the Peacocks.
McCollum then put up a season-high 34 points in a 72-55 triumph at Bryant Saturday. That came on a stellar 13-of-21 shooting, 3-of-7 from three-point range and 5-of-5 from the free throw line, marking his 11th-career game with 30+ points and third this season. In the first half, McCollum outscored the entire Bryant team by himself (20-18).
With 56 points on the week, McCollum moved all the way from 17th to 14th in Patriot League history with 1,608 career points (and is within 46 points of the top 10); he also moved from eighth to seventh in Lehigh history. For the season, McCollum is averaging 20.0 points (second in the Patriot League), 6.0 rebounds (fifth) and 3.4 assists per game (fourth). He is up to 18th nationally in scoring average.
The Mountain Hawks return home on Tuesday to host University of Maryland Eastern Shore. Tickets for all home games are now on sale and may be purchased on Lehighsports.com or by calling the ticket office at (610) 7LU-GAME.
