PHILADELPHIA – After winning their first seven dual meets of the season, Lehigh's men's swimming and diving team came up short for the third straight week, as the Mountain Hawks fell at Drexel 167-133 Saturday at the Drexel Pool in the Daskalakis Athletic Center. The Mountain Hawks won five of 16 events on the day, with a strong showing in the distance events, but fall to 7-3 on the season with the loss.
“It was a tough loss for our guys,” said Lehigh head coach Rob Herb. “We're caught in a bit of a taper slump, but we still raced hard.”
Sophomore Demetri Karedis picked up a win in the 50 free, touching the wall in 21.17 seconds to add nine points to Lehigh's total.
Despite the fact they were trailing in the meet late, Lehigh finished strong, capturing the final two events. Junior Alex Aboud won the 400 IM in 4:11.85, and then Karedis anchored a 400 free relay team that also included junior Frank Cuzzola, sophomore Chris Hoke and senior Kevin Shoemaker. They won the final race of the meet in 3:08.46.
Other members of the Mountain Hawks competed at the Navy Invitational Saturday at Lejeune Hall. Competing against athletes from a number of Patriot League schools, plus Shippensburg, junior Jeff Capobianco paced the Lehigh men with a second place finish in the 200 yard butterfly in a time of 1:58.00.
The Mountain Hawks will visit University Park, Pa. next Saturday for their final dual meet of the season when they meet Penn State at 1 p.m.
