Lehigh hosts 38th-annual Paul Short Run on Friday

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – On Friday, Lehigh University will play host to one of the largest cross country meets in the nation as the 38th-annual Paul Short Run, presented by Brooks takes center stage on the Goodman Campus Course. More than 5,000 runners from 450 colleges and high schools are scheduled to compete in races throughout the morning and afternoon.
Admission:
The price of admission for the 38th Lehigh Paul Short Run, presented by Brooks will be $5 per car. Programs, featuring meet information and a list of all participants, will be sold on site. Concessions will also be available throughout the day. For the safety of all fans and student-athletes, smoking and the consumption of alcoholic beverages will not be permitted near the race area.
Results:
Team and individual results will be updated on the official Paul Short website throughout the day. Check out Lehighsports.com for a full recap of the races as well as results at the end of the event. Results will be updated as quickly as possible following the conclusion of each race.

Lehigh Men's Profile:The Mountain Hawks enter the meet riding high after sweeping rival Lafayette in last weekend's dual meet. Lehigh runners took the top eight spots led by Sam Bernitt who placed first with a time of 26:30.3 while Evan Flach, Evans Kosgei, Tyler Mueller, Jimmy Miller, Lyle O'Brien, Casey Gilboy and Ryan Mahalsky followed in second through eighth, respectively. Lehigh has now defeated rival Lafayette in 13 straight dual races. For his efforts, Gilboy was named the Patriot League Rookie Runner of the Week. Gilboy finished 14 seconds ahead of Lafayette's top runner who placed ninth. Amazingly, Gilboy slipped and fell halfway through the race as there was a steady downpour and more than two inches of rain, but he recovered and came back to finish strong. Lehigh placed 32nd of 42 teams in last year's Paul Short Run as Kosgei led the way with a 45th place finish.
Lehigh Women's Profile:
The women's squad is also coming off a dual meet victory over Lafayette last weekend. Katherine Pierce finished the 6k first overall with a time of 21:54.6 while Savanna Plombon took second with a time of 22:11.6. The pair was part of seven Lehigh runners that finished in the top 10 as the Mountain Hawks defeated the Leopards 20-39 for Lehigh's sixth-straight Lafayette dual meet victory. After Pierce and Plombon, Shannon Nelson took fourth while Sam Anderson placed fifth and Amanda Gosselin, Jessica Kendzor and Marissa Galante finished seventh through tenth, respectively. For their efforts, Pierce was named the Patriot League Runner of the Week while Plombon was named the Patriot League Rookie Runner of the Week. Lehigh placed 24th of 41 teams in last year's Paul Short Run as Pierce led the way with a 38th-place finish and overall time of 21:22.
The 2011 Field:
This year's event will be one of the most competitive to date as several of the nation's top collegiate teams are set to square off. On the men's side, eight of the Top 25 teams in Division I will be competing, including No. 4 Oklahoma, No. 5 Iona, No. 12 Princeton, No. 15 Syracuse, No. 17 Providence, No. 18 Villanova, No. 19 Virginia and No. 22 Georgetown.
On the women's side, seven of the Top 25 teams are scheduled to run including four teams in the Top 10 led by No. 1 Georgetown, No. 3 Providence, No. 5 Villanova and No. 9 Duke.
Both Lehigh teams are ranked No. 11 in the Top 15 Mid-Atlantic Region while 13 of those Top 15 men's teams will be racing and 12 of the Top 15 women's teams will also be here.
2010 Recap:
With 4,287 runners from more than 150 different colleges and high schools, the 37th-annual Paul Short Run, presented by Brooks was once again one of the largest cross country meets in the U.S. In the men's invitational, the University of Virginia won the team title, placing three runners in the Top 25, and earning an overall score of 132. Liberty's Sam Chelanga, the 2008 winner of the men's 8K, captured his second Paul Short individual title with a time of 23:34, the second-fastest time in meet history. In the women's invitational, Georgetown captured the women's team title with 34 points as all seven Hoyas finished in the top 20 individually including Emily Infeld who finished first. In the men's college Brown 8K race, Wayne State took the title with 184 points as Ricky Flynn of Lynchburg College won the individual title with a time of 24:43. In the women's 6K Brown race, Rutgers totaled 118 points to take first place, while Millersville's Elicia Anderson took top honors with a time of 21:03. The women's 6K White race went to Kristina Koutsouros of West Chester with a time of 22:04. Swarthmore College took the women's team title in the White race with 92 points. In the men's 8k White race, Rowan took first place with 99 points with three runners in the Top 10 including the first place finisher Eric DuBois with a time of 26:10.
Paul Short:
Born in Hurt, Virginia in 1910, Paul E. Short enrolled at Lehigh University in 1930 and earned three varsity letters in football as the team's starting quarterback. Paul was an exceptional athlete and participated in both lacrosse and wrestling before graduating in 1934 with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration. After a career at Bethlehem Steel, Short joined the Lehigh Athletic Staff in 1938 and went on to combine duties as an assistant coach in football, baseball, wrestling and lacrosse, and served as Business Manager and Assistant Director of Athletics. His services were interrupted during World War II, at which time he served with distinction as a Major in the United States Army. An avid supporter of Lehigh cross country and track, Short served the Lehigh community from 1946 until his death in 1967.

Meet Notes:
-For the seventh straight year, the ChampionChip System will assist in keeping track of times. Each runner will have a computer chip on his/her shoe that will transmit an identification number and the runner's time to the finish-line computers.
-Liberty's Sam Chelanga owns the fastest time in Paul Short men's history with a 23:05 clip in the 2008 8K race. Nine of the 10 top times in the men's race have been set in the past four years.
-Marie-Louise Asselin of West Virginia holds the fastest women's time in meet history at 19:38, set in the 2008 6K race. Nine of the top 10 times in the women's race have been set in the past four years.
-Doug Smith of Gill St. Bernards High School owns the record boys' high school time for the Paul Short 5K at 15:10, set in 2007. The fastest 5K time ever recorded on the Goodman Course by a high school runner was set in 2006 by Unionville's Paul Springer at 14:47.
-Warwick Valley High School's Aislinn Ryan holds the fastest girls' 5K time in meet history at 17:03, set in 2005. The mark is also the fastest 5K time ever recorded on the Goodman Course by a high school girls' runner.
-Georgetown, Michigan State, Penn State and Villanova are the only men's teams to win consecutive Paul Short championships.
-Georgetown, Penn State, Princeton, Providence, Villanova and West Virginia are the only women's teams to win consecutive Paul Short championships.
-Georgetown, Penn State, Providence, Villanova and West Virginia are the only teams to have won both the Paul Short men's and women's championship.
-Three teams have won both the men's and women's race in the same year. Penn State swept the competition in 1981 and accomplished the feat again in 2001. Villanova won both races in 1991 and 1993, while Georgetown secured both top spots in 2003.
