BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Lehigh rising junior guard C.J. McCollum has been ranked by Basketball Prospectus as the 56th top player in Division I. The nation's leading returning scorer, McCollum is the highest Patriot League player ranked by the publication, which released Nos. 51 through 70 on Wednesday.
McCollum is currently preparing for the USA Basketball World University Games training camp, which runs from July 29 through Aug. 7 in Colorado Springs. He is one of only five student-athletes from non-BCS conferences invited to try out. McCollum will be competing against some of the nation's elite competition, from the Big East, Big Ten, Southeastern Conference, Big 12 and more.
Fellow Patriot Leaguer and Bucknell center Mike Muscala was ranked 82nd.
McCollum averaged 21.8 points per game last season to lead the nation among sophomores. This came after leading all freshmen with a 19.1 scoring average in 2009-10 when he was named Patriot League Player of the Year.
Already one of the most prolific scorers in school and Patriot League history, McCollum eclipsed 1,000 career points against Army last January, becoming the first active sophomore in the nation to reach that milestone. With 1,308 points, he is only 916 away from the Patriot League career record. McCollum is almost halfway to the Lehigh career scoring record (2,703) held by Daren Queenan.
McCollum was also highlighted on a recent Bleacher Report article among the top 25 juniors-to-be. Another piece featured him as a predicted top-10 scorer in 2011-12.
