Lehigh gets two strong pitching performances; splits with Crusaders

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh received a pair of outstanding pitching performances form sophomore Becca Bliss and freshman Ashley Quigley but had to settle for a doubleheader split with Holy Cross Saturday on senior day at Kaufman Field. Bliss fired a two-hitter as Lehigh won game one 3-0, while Quigley's one-hit effort was matched by Caitlin Belanger as the Crusaders took the nightcap 1-0.
The split moves Lehigh's record to 28-21 on the season and 12-5 in the Patriot League, while Holy Cross is now 18-24 and 10-8 in league games. The Mountain Hawks are now three games behind first place Colgate as the Raiders swept a doubleheader from Lafayette on Saturday.
The Mountain Hawks' only offense of the day came in the first inning of game one. With one out sophomore Rosie Roessel looped a single to center field and senior Alex Cueva followed with a single through the left side. Junior Julie Fernandez then stepped up and belted a towering three-run home run to right center off of Kali Haas, her fifth home run of the season. Lehigh put together threats in the second and sixth innings, but Haas successfully worked her way out of trouble.
Bliss was superb in the circle en route to her 13th win of the season. Her nemesis was Crusader right fielder Camille Trainor, who drew a one-out walk in the first inning, and picked up Holy Cross' first hit with a leadoff double to right field in the fourth. The Crusaders' only other hit was a leadoff single by Tiffany Medwid in the sixth inning. Bliss walked one and struck out three as she netted her second complete game shutout of the season.
Haas allowed three runs on seven hits for Holy Cross, walking two and striking out three. Roessel and junior Jen Colquhoun combined for four of Lehigh's seven hits.
As in the opener, the only scoring in game two came in the first inning. Belanger led off the game with a walk and moved to second on a fielder's choice as Fernandez' attempt at a force play was late. The Holy Cross pitcher then led a double-steal with Trainor to move runners to second and third. Keeley Seniuk brought Belanger home with a sacrifice fly as Holy Cross took a 1-0 lead without the benefit of a hit.
Beginning with Seniuk's sacrifice fly, Quigley retired 18 straight Crusaders, as she carried a no-hitter into the seventh, when Seniuk picked up Holy Cross' only hit of the nightcap with a one-out single to right field.
Belanger was equally impressive for the Crusaders, allowing just three base runners. Fernandez led off the second inning with a walk and singled to left for Lehigh's only hit of the nightcap. Senior Sam Miller drew a two-out walk in the fifth but Lehigh was unable to capitalize. Belanger walked two and struck out four to earn her fourth win of the year, while Quigley suffered a hard-luck loss allowing one run on one hit while walking one and striking out four. Quigley is now 11-11 on the season.
Lehigh and Holy Cross will wrap-up their four game series with a doubleheader Sunday at Kaufman Field with first pitch for game one set for noon.
