Mountain Hawks earn four All-East performances at IC4A/ECAC Championships

BOSTON, Mass. – The Lehigh men's and women's track teams had a successful weekend at the IC4A/ECAC Track and Field Championships. Overall as team, the men's finished 31st while the women's team placed 43rd. Lehigh had four athletes qualify for All-East Honors, which is earned by those who finish in the top eight of their event.
"To leave here with four All-East performances is very satisfying," said Lehigh Track and Field head coach Matt Utesch. "This is one of our best indoor seasons we have ever had. It is a great way for us to prepare for the outdoor season and we are really excited for that to begin."
Lehigh's Evans Kosgei earned an All-East performance in the 5000 meter, as he clocked a time of 14:18.91, which is a school record. Kosgei won his specific heat and placed sixth overall in the event. In his section, Kosgei sat right with the field for the beginning and late stages. With about 1000 meters to go, Kosgei there in a kick and broke away from the field to win the heat.Kosgei breaks Rob Hampson's record, who ran it in 2006 at a time of 14:27.09.
Also earning an All-East performance was freshman Patrick Ciez, who cleared on attempts at 1.99 and 2.04 meters in the high jump. He placed seventh and also had great attempts at 2.09 meters.
"Pat had been great for us so far as a freshman," said Utesch. "I would look for big things from him come this spring and in the future as well."
Stephen Tutunjian earned an All-East performance in the triple jump, as he posted a jump of 14.81 meters.
"Stephen had a lot of pressure on himself heading into the finals," said Utesch. "He was really aggressive, and that proved to be the key for his success in this event."
Jessica Kendzor, who earned the Patriot League Championships Rookie of the Meet last week, was Lehigh's fourth All-East performer, as she broke the school record in the school record in the 1000 meter preliminaries, scoring a time of 2:52.79. On Sunday, she broke the school record again in the finals with a time of 2:52.37. Kendzor has now broken her record three times this season. Coming into the season, Sarah Serwo held the previous record in 2009, with a time of 2:54.34.
Lehigh's Distance Medley Relay team of Julia Perry, Elizabeth McManus, Kathleen Ryan and Andrea Mascaro, posted a time of 11:58.71 in the event, placing them in eighth in their heat. The time was a school record for that team. The previous record was beaten two weeks ago at the Patriot League Championships.
The Mountain Hawks will open the outdoor season on March 24 at Winthrop.
