Five-run sixth powers Lehigh past Binghamton 9-5

HARRISONBURG, Va. – Lehigh wrapped-up action at the JMU Days Inn Invitational with a 9-5 win over Binghamton Sunday at Veterans Memorial Park. The Mountain Hawks broke open a 4-4 tie by scoring five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning on a two-run triple by junior Alex Cueva and a three-run home run by sophomore Liz Lucas.
The win improves Lehigh's record to 8-10, including a 3-2 mark at the JMU Days Inn Invitational.
Binghamton, the designated visiting team, scored two runs in the top of the first inning on a two-run home run by Jessica Phillips off of sophomore Rebecca Bliss.
Cueva and Lucas teamed up to help Lehigh get a run back in the bottom of the first, as Cueva drew a one out walk, moved to second on a single by junior Julie Fernandez, and then scored on an error by Bearcat right fielder Anna Blessing after a single by Lucas.The Bearcats (7-7) tacked on two more runs in the top of the second on a two-run home run by Stephanie Deluca.
Lehigh battled back to tie the game, scoring three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. The rally started with a two-out walk issues to freshman Jessica Long. Sophomore Rosie Roessel followed with a single, before junior Audra Wood tripled to left field to score two runs. Cueva followed with a single up the middle, scoring Wood to tie the game at four.
The Mountain Hawks broke the game open with five runs in the bottom of the sixth. The inning began with Long reaching on an error. Roessel sacrificed Long to second, and then Wood reached on an error moving runners to first and third. Cueva then put Lehigh in front with a triple down the right field line. After a walk to Fernandez, Lucas blasted her fourth home run of the season, a three-run shot to provide the Mountain Hawks with some cushion.
Binghamton scored a run in the top of the seventh, but Bliss shut the door from there on the way to her fourth win of the season. Bliss allowed five runs on ten hits striking out eight and walking none as she moves to 4-1.
Kate Price, the second of three Binghamton pitchers, took the loss allowing five runs in 1.2 innings of work.
As a team, Lehigh pounded out 11 hits, with Cueva, Fernandez, Lucas and sophomore Jacqi Kennelly pounding out two apiece. After committing ten errors in two games on Saturday, Lehigh tightened up its defense as the Mountain Hawks did not commit an error for the first time in five games.
The Mountain Hawks return to action on Wednesday when they head to Philadelphia to play their first true doubleheader of the season against the Penn Quakers. First pitch for game one is set for 2:30.
