Harrisonburg, Va. – Sophomore Rebecca Bliss tossed a no-hitter to lead Lehigh to a 3-1 victory over the St. John's Red Storm on Saturday afternoon in the JMU Days Inn Invitational at Veterans Memorial Park. Lehigh split for the second consecutive day as it suffered a 10-1 loss to 17-9 James Madison in game two.
In game one, senior Alex Cueva's double with one out in first inning began a Mountain Hawk attack. Then with two outs, sophomore Liz Lucas scorched a double to give the Mountain Hawks a 1-0 lead. After a passed ball and a fielding error, Lehigh put two more runs on the board and had a 3-0 lead after the first inning.
St. John's attempted to rally in the fourth, scoring on a fielder's choice to make the score 3-1. The Red Storm runner that scored made it on base earlier in the inning after being hit by a pitch. But Bliss was phenomenal after that, as she allowed one run in her start with just two walks. She also struck out two batters. Bliss picked up her third victory of the season in the win.
As a team, Lehigh collected seven hits. Wood and Cueva each had two hits for the Mountain Hawks, while Lucas and freshman Jessica Long were each credited with RBIs.
In the second game, the Mountain Hawks were held to six hits while James Madison cracked 16 in a dominating 10-1 win for the Dukes. Six different Mountain Hawk players each had a hit.
Lehigh was the first team to get on the board, as Cueva scored when Liz Lucas reached on an error with two outs. That would be the only run Lehigh would get though, as James Madison tied the game at one in third and then picked up the game winning runs in the fourth inning.
Lehigh will close out its action at the Days Inn Invitational with Binghamton tomorrow.
