BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh men's swimming and diving teams wrapped up the fall portion of their season last weekend. Three Mountain Hawks competed at the USA Swimming Winter Nationals in Atlanta, Ga., while the rest of Lehigh's squad earned a resounding 138-24 win over NJIT at Jacobs Pool.
Senior Kevin Shoemaker and sophomores Demetri Karedis and Chris Hoke represented Lehigh at the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center. Shoemaker recorded the highest finish with a 67th place in the 200 meter butterfly event in a time of 2:09.83. Hoke also had a great performance, placing 72nd in the 50 meter freestyle event, finishing in 23.93 seconds. His teammate Karedis finished right behind him in the same event in a time of 24.06, finishing in 80th place. The U.S. Nationals afforded some of Lehigh's top swimmers to test their mettle against the nation's best while attempting to qualify for the 2012 Olympic Trials.
Meanwhile at Jacobs Pool, the Mountain Hawks gave some opportunities to their younger up-and-coming swimmers to prove themselves. In the 200 yard medley relay, Lehigh swam three teams that took the top three spots above NJIT. The “A” team, consisting of Kyle Jennings, Kyle Katase, Jeff Capobianco and Christoph Schilling, finished with a time of 1:42.84, just in front of the “B” team that finished in 1:42.88.
Two freshmen, Mark Bushner and Timothy Parsons took the top two spots in the 1000 yard freestyle in 10:29.54 and 10:44.21 respectively. In the 200 yard freestlye, Lehigh freshman secured a sweep of the top three spots. Martin Kendig, Michael Wheaton and Eric Sherwood finished in 1:50.12, 1:50.17 and 1:50.19 respectively.
Lehigh also swept the 200 yard IM, led by freshman Matthew Ferguson with a time of 2:00.20. The team went on to sweep five more events including the 100 yard butterfly, 100 yard backstroke, 500 yard freestyle, 100 yard backstroke, and the 200 yard freestyle relay.
The Mountain Hawks will break for final exams and the holidays, before returning to the pool for winter training. Lehigh will open 2012 at home when the Mountain Hawks host Marist January 7 at Jacobs Pool.
