Men’s swimming and diving beats West Chester 136.5-106.5

WEST CHESTER, Pa. – The Lehigh men's swimming and diving team won its second straight meet to open the season as the Mountain Hawks defeated West Chester 136.5-106.5 on Friday night. Lehigh won 7-of-13 events and in the events it didn't win, got important points with second and third place finishes.
 
Lehigh set the tone early in the 400 yard medley relay as senior Christopher Toth, junior Alex Aboud, senior Kevin Shoemaker and junior Frank Cuzzola captured first place with a time of 3:34.03.
 
While the Mountain Hawks were unable to capture first in the next event - the 1000 yard freestyle – Lehigh freshmen Danny Bennett (9.50.89) and Jake Green (10:03.43) took second and third place respectively.
 
It was a photo finish in the third race as Toth tied West Chester's swimmer for first place with a time of 1:45.91 while junior Frank Cuzzola took third (1:47.27).
 
Lehigh kept rolling as junior Demetri Karedis won the 50 yard freestyle with a time of 21.17 while sophomore Chris Hoke placed third (21.86). In the next race, it was Shoemaker (1:57.82) and Aboud (1:58.61) that took the top two sports respectively in the 200 yard IM.
 
It was Shoemaker again in the 200 yard butterfly as he took first with a time of 1:54.90 while Jeffrey Capobianco was third (2:04.89).
 
In the 100 yard freestyle, Karedis took second and Hoke took third with times of 22.56 and 22.68 respectively.
Lehigh then took first and third in the 200 yard backstroke as Toth won it with a time of 28.57 and freshman Sean Brant was third (28.26).
 
In the 500 yard freestyle, Bennett placed second with a time of 26.53. And then in the 200 yard breaststroke, Aboud placed first with a time of 30.69 while freshman John Lorentzan placed third (31.32).
 
On the diving boards, senior John Styles placed third in the one meter, scoring 244.30 points while junior Michael Harshman was right behind him in fourth with 217.30 points. The duo along with freshman Daniel Bateman finished 3-4-5 in the three meter.
 
In the final race of the meet - the 400 yard freestyle relay - Lehigh took first as Cuzzola, Hoke, Karedis and Bennett won the race with a time of 3:10.35.
 
The Mountain Hawks will return to the pool on Saturday, October 29th to host Colgate at Jacobs Pool at 1 p.m. Lehigh defeated Colgate last season 196-94.
