BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The winter storm that blanketed most of the northeast couldn't prevent Lehigh from hosting Colgate in its first home meet of the season Saturday at Jacobs Pool. Despite the loss of power in Lehigh's Taylor Gym, the Mountain Hawks and Raiders went through with their meet, with Lehigh improving to 3-0 on the young season with a 229-62 triumph.
“ We basically swam in darkness with just the emergency lighting by the pool,” explained Lehigh head coach Rob Herb. “We still had many bright swims. Both teams were in good spirits, even though we ran the meet 'old school style' without a timing system or starting system, just stopwatches and a whistle.”

Senior Kevin Shoemaker won three events, while junior Demetri Karedis captured two, including a Jacobs Pool-record time of 20.99 seconds in winning the 50 yard freestyle. Karedis also led a Lehigh sweep in the 100 free with a time of 47.96 with junior Frank Cuzzola and sophomore Chris Hoke occupying the next three spots. Shoemaker won the 100 and 200 yard butterfly events as well as the 200 yard individual medley.
Freshman Dan Bennett led a top three sweep in the 1000 free with a time of 9:56.66, while Lehigh also swept the top three spots in the 200 breast, with Matt Ferguson leading the way at 2:13.21 and the 500 free with senior Chris Toth posting a 4:49.28. Toth also captured the 200 free in 1:46.72.
Two other freshmen won individual events, with Henry Cohen winning the 100 back in 54.75 seconds and Sean Brant winning the 200 back in 1:58.75.
On the diving boards, senior Connor Styles and junior Mike Harshman swept the top two places in both the one and three meter events.
The Mountain Hawks will return to the pool next Saturday when they host Rider at Jacobs Pool. Diving events will begin at 10 a.m. with swimming to follow at 1 p.m.
