LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Patriot League swimming and diving championships are less than a month away and Lehigh got an early look at the host venue as the Mountain Hawks battled Bucknell Saturday at Kinney Natatorium. Despite several strong individual performances, the Mountain Hawks fell in both meets with the women losing 189-106 while the men suffered a 170-122 setback.
The losses marked the first time this season that Lehigh's men and women were swept in a dual meet.
As a whole the Mountain Hawks had their hands full with the defending Patriot League runners-up, who clinched the meet with two events to spare. Sophomore Emily DiDonato added a second place finish in the 100 yard breaststroke, while Brooke Smalley, Stephanie Yaszemski, Alena Pollitt and Paola Simon placed second in the meet-opening 200 yard medley relay.
The loss drops the Mountain Hawks to 4-4 on the season.
Lehigh's men suffered their second loss after winning their first eight dual meets to start the season. The Mountain Hawks won just two
events as Bucknell avenged Lehigh's upset win on senior day at Jacobs Pool last season. Junior Chris Toth delivered Lehigh's first win, taking the 1650 yard freestyle in 16:22.80. Sophomore Tyler Lareau accounted for the Mountain Hawks' other win, as he took the 100 back in 51.15 seconds.
The Mountain Hawk men did post eight second place finishes, including three runner-up finishes from junior Kevin Shoemaker in the 100 and 200 yard fly and 200 yard individual medley.
The Mountain Hawks will be off next weekend and will return to action on Saturday February 5 when they visit Penn State for a 12 p.m. meet.
