Lehigh women open things up at the Penn Relays

PHILADELPHIA – Several members of the Lehigh women’s track and field team made the trip down to Philadelphia for the first day of the Penn Relays on Thursday. The Mountain Hawks competed in both field and track events to kick off a three-day span of competition for the team. The Penn Relays is a historic meet that started in 1895 and this year will feature over 22,000 entries.
Junior Emily Settle, who finished third in the hammer throw last year at the Penn Relays, placed 11th this year with a distance of 164’ 2.0”. Senior Kathryn McLaughlin tied for 14th place in the high jump with a height of 5’ 3.25”. The winners of the event jumped the same height, but McLaughlin faulted on her first attempt. Her classmate Ashlee Atwell tied for 18th in the pole vault with a vault of 11’ 6.25”.
The distance medley team made up of freshmen Lauren and Brittany Pietrosh, junior Andrea Mascaro and senior Lauranne Kline finished 15th in a time of 12:04.55. The 4X100 team of sophomore Alexandra Doersam, freshmen Elizabeth McManus, Melissa Knapp and Khaaleedah Smith were also in action.
A couple of men were in action in the 5,000 meters, as junior Evan Flach ran an impressive race to earn a sixth place finish in a time of 14:30.31. His classmate Stephen Sample finished 26th in a time 14:51.49.
The rest of the men’s team will take their turn at the Penn Relays on Friday with events taking place throughout the day. The Lehigh Games will also get underway at the Goodman Campus with two field events.
