BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh track and field teams will close out the indoor season this weekend at the IC4A/ECAC Championships in Boston, Mass. The men’s team will compete at the IC4A Championship at Boston University, while the women will compete in the ECAC Championship at the Reggie Lewis Track & Athletic Center.
Eight Mountain Hawks will compete in the two-day championships in Boston. Seniors Khalil Uqdah, Ashlee Atwell and Nick Ray, sophomore Stephen Tutunjian and the women’s 4x800 relay team will all be in action.
The men’s team has three field competitors in Uqdah (pole vault), Ray (shot put) and Tutunjian, in the long and triple jump. The women’s lone individual competitor, Ashlee Atwell, will compete in the pole vault.
The women’s 4x800 team consisting of freshmen twins Lauren and Brittany Pietrosh, senior co-captain Jillian Randolph and sophomore Alexandra Neville are the only track student-athletes competing this week. The relay team qualified for ECACs at the Patriot League Championships where they finished in a time of 9:15.92.
“We have a smaller group competing this weekend, but they’re our top kids,” head coach Matt Utesch said. “My feeling is that we’re in a good position to compete well this weekend. Khalil has a phenomenal shot at qualifying for nationals. He needs only three more inches and then he will get his chance at the show.”
The Mountain Hawks are coming off a strong showing at the 2010 Patriot League Championships that saw the women’s team finish in third and Uqdah set a new Patriot League record in the pole vault. Uqdah cleared a height of 17’ 3.5” to earn Field Athlete of the Meet honors and take first in the pole vault. Other first place finishers at the Patriot League Championships included Ray and junior Charrell Mack.
The action will get underway Saturday morning and continue into Sunday. Check back to Lehighsports.com for all the latest results from the weekend.
