Lehigh off to a good start in West Point

WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Lehigh track and field teams had a strong first day at the Patriot League Championships on Friday, earning two top five finishes in the women’s pentathlon. Senior Kathryn McLaughlin took third place as she set a new personal-record, while her classmate Catherine Bigelow finished in fifth. Through four events in the men’s heptathlon, sophomore Kyle Forrest is currently in fourth place and junior Stephen Rumizen sits in sixth.
In the first completed event at the Championships, McLaughlin took third place in the pentathlon with 3,324 points and Bigelow finished in fifth (3,210 points), which is also a personal-record. McLaughlin earned second place finishes in the long jump and in the 800, while tying for first in the high jump to highlight a strong first day. Bigelow placed fourth in both jumping events and finished third in the 800 with a time of 2:33.48.
The women’s team is currently tied for second with Navy as each team has eight points. Bucknell is in first place with 10 points off a strong performance from Amy Mantush who finished first in the pentathlon with 3,449 points.
Forrest put forth a strong showing in the high jump as he tied for first place with a jump of 6’ 7.5”. Forrest had top five finishes in two of the remaining three events (long jump, 60). Rumizen put his shot putting skills on display as he earned a second place finish in the event with a throw of 37’ 11.5”. After the four events, Forrest has 2,640 points and Rumizen has 2,629.
The men’s heptathlon will finish up Saturday morning at 8:45 a.m. followed by the field events at 11 a.m. and the track events at 1 p.m.
