BETHLEHEM, Pa. – For the sixth time this season freshman C.J. McCollum has been named the Patriot League Rookie of the Week, it was announced on Monday. McCollum notched his first career double-double in Lehigh’s win over American this past weekend as he totaled 19 points and a season high 13 rebounds in the Mountain Hawks’ 77-65 victory in the nation’s capital. With this latest selection, a Lehigh player has been named Rookie of the Week each week since the start of the new year last month. McCollum has garnered four of those awards, while classmate Gabe Knutson has been honored with two.
McCollum sank five field goals in Saturday’s win as well as eight-of-ten shots at the foul line. The Canton, Ohio native made all six of his free throw attempts in the final two minutes of the game and he added four assists and a pair of steals.
McCollum’s six Rookie of the Week awards this season are tied for the fifth-most in league annals, three off the record held by Lehigh senior captain Marquis Hall, who won the award nine times during the 2006-07 season. McCollum currently ranks fourth in America in scoring among freshmen at 16.4 points per game, which is tied with Kentucky’s star studded freshmen duo of DeMarcus Cousins and John Wall.
The 6-3 McCollum is averaging 4.2 rebounds and 1.9 assists for the Mountain Hawks, while shooting 42% from downtown and 78% at the charity stripe. He has scored in double figures 19 times, including Lehigh’s last 12 games.
McCollum and the rest of the Patriot League leading Mountain Hawks return to the court on Wednesday evening when they play host to the Navy Midshipmen at Stabler Arena. Tip-off is set for 7:05 and tickets may be purchased by calling 610-7LU-GAME, by logging onto Lehighsports.com or at the arena box office prior to tip-off.
