BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Following a week in which he helped lead Lehigh to a perfect 3-0 record and established a new career-high in points, freshman Gabe Knutson was named the Patriot League Rookie of the Week on Monday. A native of Urbandale, Iowa Knutson averaged 12.3 points and 7.0 rebounds in three Mountain Hawks victories last week, including a career-high 23-point performance in the Brown and White’s 86-79 victory over NJIT on January 2. This is Knutson’s first career award from the Patriot League and the third time this season a Mountain Hawk was named Rookie of the Week after C.J. McCollum earned two honors in November.
Knutson began the week with a six point, nine rebound performance at Longwood on December 28 as the first year standout sank three-of-five shots from the floor and also blocked a shot. Knutson followed that up with eight points on three-of-four shooting and eight more rebounds in the Mountain Hawks overtime win at Delaware State on December 30. The 6-9 forward then completed his week with a career night as he sank 9-of-13 shots en route to 23 points in Lehigh’s 86-79 win over NJIT. Knutson added four rebounds and a block versus the Highlanders.
For the season Knutson is averaging 8.6 points and a team-leading 6.7 rebounds per game. Knutson currently ranks fifth in the Patriot League in rebounds and he is shooting 50% from the floor. Knutson, who has started all 14 games for the Brown and White, is averaging 26.7 minutes per contest.
Knutson and the Mountain Hawks return to action on January 5 when they play host to the Yale Bulldogs at Stabler Arena. Tip-off is set for 7:05 and tickets can be purchased at the arena box office prior to tip-off.
