Different pool, same results as Lehigh beats NJIT

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Issues with Jacobs Pool forced Lehigh's men's swimming and diving team into a different pool, but it was a similar result for the Mountain Hawks, who moved to 6-0 with a 100-66 win over NJIT Sunday at Morrissey Pool. The meet was Lehigh's first varsity meet at Morrissey Pool in over 60 years and despite juggling its lineup and getting some younger swimmers action, it proved to be a successful meet for the Brown and White.

“Morrissey Pool has helped produce championship teams, nationally ranked swimmers and Patriot League champions,” said Lehigh head coach Rob Herb. “Today the pool helped Lehigh keep things rolling to a win over NJIT and a 6-0 record. The team and coaches from NJIT were awesome and both teams did well in setting pool records that have lasted since the 1930s.”

Ten events were contested on the day with Lehigh winning seven of them. In the opening 200 medley relay, sophomores Dave Pennenga and Tyler Lareau teamed with senior Jon Gorka and junior Jared Blacker to win in 1:54.06.

Senior Matt Alford won the 200 free in 1:52.73 with freshman James Heintzelman finishing second. Distance specialist Chris Toth swam the 200 IM on Sunday and won with a time of 2:06.73. On a similar note, sprinters Frank Cuzzola and Chris Hoke swam the 100 back on Sunday and finished in the top two spots, with Cuzzola winning in 1:02.60.

Other winners for Lehigh included junior Angelo DiGiacinto, who took the 500 free in 5:08.51 and junior Kevin Shoemaker who won the 100 breast in 1:06.06. Freshman Connor Cackovic also won the 100 fly in 56.24.

The Mountain Hawks will return to the pool on Friday, November 19 when they visit rival Lafayette.
