Mountain Hawks sweep Lafayette for third straight year

EASTON, Pa. – The Lehigh swimming and diving teams continued their recent dominance over rival Lafayette with their third straight sweep of the Leopards Friday night at Ruef Natatorium. The Mountain Hawk men defeated Lafayette for the 20th straight year, winning 213-85 while the Lehigh women prevailed for the third straight year by a 172-28 margin.

Lehigh's men moved to 7-0 on the season by capturing 13 of 16 events. Sophomore Frank Cuzzola continued his strong start to the season by winning the 100 and 200 yard freestyle and finishing second to freshman Chris Hoke in the 50 free. Junior Chris Toth was also a double-winner, taking the 1000 free in 10:03.97 and the 500 free in 4:50.65. Rounding out the two-event winners for the Lehigh men was sophomore Alex Aboud who won the 200 breast in 2:09.40 and the 400 IM in 4:15.19.
Senior Billy Dunne and sophomore Tyler Lareau were dominant in the backstroke events, with Lareau winning the 100 in 55.11 with Dunne taking second and Dunne taking the 200 in 1:57.64 with Lareau earning the runner-up spot. Junior Kevin Shoemaker had a dominant performance in the 200 fly, winning in 1:56.89, nearly four seconds better than runner-up junior Angelo DiGiacinto.
Junior Connor Styles won the three meter dive, while Lehigh's men also won the 400 medley relay and the 400 free relay.
The Lehigh women set the tone for their victory by claiming the top two spots in the first three races. Freshmen Meredith Bayer and Stephanie Yaszemski teamed with juniors Priscilla Barletta and Paola Simon to win the 400 medley relay. In the 1000 free freshman Giovanna Patafio and junior Jill Rann finished 1-2 with Patafio winning in 10:45.21. Barletta won two individual events, beginning with the 200 free in 1:57.87, with senior Kristen Keenan finishing second. Barletta also captured the 100 free in 54.59.
The Mountain Hawks won ten of 16 events on the women's side. Sophomore Emily DiDonato won two individual events, the 100 and 200 breast. Yaszemski took second in the 100 and third in the 200 with sophomore Danielle Caruso taking second in the 200 to complete the top three sweep. Caruso followed her runner-up finish with a win in the 400 IM with a time of 4:46.56. DiDonato finished second.
Bayer was also a double-winner for the Lehigh women, winning the 200 back in 2:10.60 and the 100 fly in 1:00.23. Junior Alyssa Siano won the 200 fly in 2:13.56. Lehigh improves to 3-2 with the win.
The Mountain Hawks will be off for nearly two months until they return to action at Marist on Saturday, January 8.
