POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Lehigh men's swimming team improved to 9-0 with a dominating 172.5-125.5 win over Marist on Friday, while the women fell to the defending MAAC Champions, 186-109. The men racked up 10 first-place finishes, highlighted by three from sophomores Alex Aboud and Tyler Lareau.
“After a week of solid, hard training, we pulled out the win,” said head coach Rob Herb. “It is a rough part of the season with hard training, difficult travel and exhaustion, but the team did well getting back into racing mode.”
The tandem of Aboud, Lareau, junior Angelo DiGiacinto and senior Andrew DiPietro combined to win the 400 medley relay with a time of 3:36.85. Aboud went on to win both the 100 (1:02.97) and 200 (2:15.66) breaststrokes as well.
Also winning three races was Lareau, who added to his resume by winning the 100 backstroke (52.94) while also teaming on the first-place 400 freestyle relay tandem. Sophomore Frank Cuzzola, senior Matt Alford and freshman Chris Hoke also swam as part of the group that finished with a stellar time of 3:13.48.
Juniors Kevin Shoemaker and Chris Toth won two individual races as well, Shoemaker the 200 butterfly (1:55.72) and 200 IM (1:57.99) and Toth in the 500 (4:47.76) and 100 (9:59.46) freestyles.
DiGiacinto added a win in the 100 butterfly (53.29) to round out Lehigh's top finishes.
The women struggled in only winning two races, one individual and one team. Sophomore Danielle Caruso won the individual race, the 200 IM, in 2:20.02.
“Tired and beaten down, the women still showed fight to the end,” said Herb. “In the end, the MAAC champions were just a little too much.”
The Mountain Hawks did impress in the final race of the day, the 400 freestyle relay, coming in first, second and third. The tandem of junior Priscilla Barletta, senior Kristen Keenan, sophomore Katie Brinkhoff and junior Paola Simon spearheaded the effort with a first-place time of 3:47.34.
Both Mountain Hawk squads return to action on Friday when they host Army at 5 p.m. at Jacobs Pool.
