BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Patriot League announced its first-ever Cross Country Academic All-League teams on Friday, with Lehigh runners earning a spot on both the men's and women's teams. Junior Katherine Pierce represented the Mountain Hawks on the women's team, while Evans Kosgei made the team on the men's side.
Seven runners were named to both the men's and women's Academic All-Patriot League teams, the same numbers that were named to the All-Patriot League first team at last Saturday's Patriot League Championships. To be eligible for the Academic All-Patriot League Team, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average and be a starter or key player in his/her sport. Freshmen or students in their first academic year at their school are not eligible for the honor.
A native of Moiben, Kenya, Kosgei owns a 3.83 grade point average majoring in computer science and engineering. He is a member of both the Dean's List and Patriot League Academic Honor Roll. Kosgei earned the prestigious P.C. Rossin Engineering Fellowship in 2009 and was also recognized as an Arthur Ashe Sports Scholar.
Pierce was Lehigh's top female finisher at the Patriot League Championships, coming in tenth overall in the women's 6K race. She was consistently Lehigh's top finisher on the trails this fall, including a tenth place finish at the Iona Meet of Champions, and runner-up finishes at the Lehigh Invitational and the Lehigh-Lafayette dual meet.
A second-team All-Patriot League selection this year and a two-time All-League runner overall, Pierce has excelled in the classroom where she owns a 3.51 cumulative grade point average. Pierce is in Lehigh's IDEAS (Integrated Degree in Engineering, Arts and Sciences) program and is focusing on architecture and design arts with some civil engineering mixed in. She is a member of both the Dean's List and Patriot League Academic Honor Roll.
On Friday the league also announced its Scholar-Athletes of the Year for cross country. Colgate's Elise DeRoo was named the women's Scholar-Athlete of the Year, while American's Colin Eustis was named the men's Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
The men's Academic All-League team consists of Eustis, Kosgei, Jake Schroeder of Bucknell, Brian Morenus of Army, Ed Sheridan of Colgate, Matt DeVillers of Navy and Chris Bergen of Holy Cross.
The women's team consists of DeRoo, Pierce, Erin Koch of American, Alysha Hooper and Sarah Moniz of Bucknell, Julie Tarallo of Colgate and Brigid Byrne of Navy.
The Lehigh cross country teams will compete at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Qualifiers November 13 in University Park, Pa.
