Mountain Hawks enjoy strong Sunday at Lehigh Fall Invite

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh men's tennis team hosted the first of two home fall events this weekend as the Mountain Hawks welcomed Buffalo, Monmouth, Niagara and Lafayette to the Goodman Campus for the Lehigh Fall Invitational. The Mountain Hawks had a slow start to the weekend but rebounded with a strong showing Sunday in singles and doubles action against Niagara.
“The academic rigors of last week were really tough on our guys and it showed on Saturday,” said Lehigh head coach Dave Shook. “Today it was much better. Our guys got some extra rest last night and came out ready to play.”
The Mountain Hawks were in the midst of midterm exams off the court and it showed in their Saturday struggles, as Lehigh dropped a pair of doubles matches and six singles matches to Buffalo on Saturday. The Mountain Hawks also played three doubles matches against Monmouth, with juniors Leland Richardson and Edgars Rauza accounting for the only win of the day, with an 8-3 win over Stephen Suboleski and Jon Silverstein.On Sunday, Lehigh squared off against Niagara in doubles and singles with much better results. With Lehigh's top team of Troy List and Collin Laffey being held out, the Mountain Hawks' other three teams picked up doubles wins. Lehigh's three winning doubles teams featured sophomore Matt Savran and senior Cameron Silbert, Richardson and junior Ryan Krueger, and Rauza and sophomore Andrew Krentz.
In singles action, Lehigh won five of seven matches, with Savran, Krentz, Rauza, Silbert and freshman Timur Chernykh picking up wins.
The Mountain Hawks will continue fall play when they host the Lehigh Fall Tennis Championships, October 16-17 at the Lewis Tennis Center and on the Ulrich Varsity Courts.
