BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Seniors Whitney Lowe and Lisa Sweeney extended their respective hitting streaks to 14 games as Lehigh ran its winning streak to eight straight with a doubleheader sweep of Marist Wednesday at Kaufman Field. Sweeney ripped a pair of hits and struck out ten in the pitcher’s circle as the Mountain Hawks won game one 5-1, while Lowe had three hits in the nightcap as Lehigh prevailed 7-1. With the sweep Lehigh moves to 21-14-1 on the season, while Marist is now 10-24.
In the opener, the Mountain Hawks broke a 1-1 tie with two runs in the bottom of the third inning. Freshman Julie Fernandez brought home classmate Audra Wood with a single up the middle. Three batters later, sophomore Alex Cueva singled through the left side, scoring pinch runner Ali Torborg to put Lehigh up 3-1.
The Mountain Hawks tacked on to their lead with two more runs in the fifth as Sweeney doubled to left field to score Lowe and later scored on one of four wild pitches thrown by Red Foxes starter Caitlin Schell.
In the circle Sweeney allowed a run on four hits while striking out ten and walking two as she improves to 12-8 on the season.
Lehigh continued to pile up hits and base runners in game two. The Mountain Hawks loaded the bases in the first inning and freshman Jen Colquhoun hit a fielder’s choice that scored Wood. In the second, Lehigh loaded the bases with one out before Fernandez and Sweeney delivered back-to-back singles to extend the Mountain Hawks’ lead to 3-0.
The Mountain Hawks added two more runs in the fourth on a Marist error and a RBI groundout by Cueva. Lehigh added single runs in the fifth inning on Fernandez’ second RBI single of the game; and in the sixth freshman Tenley Halaquist scored after a Marist error.
Wood (3-for-5) joined Lowe in racking up a three-hit game in the nightcap. The freshman was 5-for-8 in the doubleheader with three runs scored.
Junior Tiffany Curtis moved to 9-4 with the victory in the circle. Curtis allowed a run on five hits, while walking one and fanning four. Marist scored its only run on a solo home run by McCallion Campbell in the fifth.
