KISSIMMEE, Fla. – Freshman Julie Fernandez belted her third home run of the season as Lehigh snapped its two-game slide with a 7-1 win over Fairfield Monday afternoon at the Rebel Spring Games. The two-run blast from Fernandez led to a five-fifth inning as the Mountain Hawks bounced back from a 3-1 loss to Detroit earlier in the day. With the split, Lehigh is now 5-3 on the season with two more games to play at the Rebel Spring Games.
Lehigh and Fairfield were scoreless in the fifth inning when freshman Audra Wood led off the inning with a base hit and then stole second. Two batters later, Fernandez delivered a two-run home run to left field to put the Mountain Hawks in front 2-0. The Mountain Hawks added three more runs in the inning and never looked back.
Senior Lisa Sweeney took care of the rest in the circle, en route to her third victory of the season (3-0).
“Julie had herself a good day with four or five hits,” said Lehigh head coach Fran Troyan. “Her home run really awakened our team and helped us out of our slump. We never looked back after that.”
Earlier on Monday, Lehigh fell to Detroit despite out-hitting the Titans nine to five on the day. Detroit picked up a run in the first inning on an RBI single from Brianna Sesoko.
Lehigh tied the game in the second on an RBI infield single from senior Kristyn Kubiak, but Detroit went back in front on an RBI triple from Kristin Sclater in the fourth inning and added an insurance run on a sacrifice fly by Sclater in the sixth.
Sophomore Bri Gaumer started in the circle and took the loss, as she falls to 0-2 on the season. Jill Perry earned the win for Detroit, allowing just one run on nine hits in seven innings.
The Mountain Hawks will wrap-up action at the Rebel Spring Games on Tuesday with games against Tennessee State at 9 a.m. and St. Bonaventure at 1 p.m.
