By day, former track and field captain Matt Rosetti ’97 works as a Vice President for Fortis Capital, a New York-based commodities finance group. When he needs a release from work, he turns to writing. Rosetti recently co-authored his first book, The Worst of Sports; a lighthearted celebration of ineptitude in sports which the book’s subtitle says includes “Chumps, Cheats and Chokers from the games we love.”
“The main goal of the book is to educate, and entertain,” says Rosetti, who earned his B.A. in International Careers. “We did some exhaustive research, but this is not a condemnation of sports. It’s a celebration of ineptitude, from the chokers, to the terrible teams. It’s been covered before, but not as broadly as we’ve been able to do it.”
The book, which was co-authored by
In his student-athlete days, Rosetti competed on both the track and cross country teams. He was one of Lehigh’s top male runners on the trail as a junior and senior. On the track he still ranks in the top ten in school annals for the indoor 1000 meters, as well as the 3000 meter steeplechase.
“One of the biggest things I took from Lehigh, in writing this book was learning how to juggle between my regular job, and the writing of this book,” explains Rosetti. “It was comparable to my student-athlete experience, juggling both academic and athletic pursuits. There were a lot of lessons learned.
Rosetti continues, “We had to dig down and do a lot of research. I’d get home from work at night, eat dinner, maybe get in a workout and then sit at the computer and write. It got old after a while, but I’ve got no regrets. It’s pretty cool to walk into a bookstore and see it on the shelf or on a table right next to some of the best sports authors out there.”
The book is available online and at most major bookstores, just in time for the holiday season.
“Even if you’re not a huge sports fan, this book has some interesting stories,” says Rosetti. “We want the people to be entertained, and to laugh at what they read. It’s the lighter side of sports. We definitely enjoy the best of things in sports, but on the flip side most fans can probably relate better to the other side, and this book is a reflection of that side.”
