Women fourth at Patriot League Championships

West Point, NY – Seniors Maureen Schaub and Edann Brady placed in the top-20 as the Lehigh women placed fourth at the Patriot League Championships at Army on Saturday. The men placed a pair of freshmen in the top-30 on their way to a sixth place finish. Both teams benefited from good grouping throughout the race.

On the women’s side, Schaub was the top Lehigh finisher in 16th place, completing the 6K course in 23:53. In 20th place was Brady in her time of 23:59. Also scoring for the women were sophomores Andrea Luebbe and Deanna Willard and freshman Jillian Koste. Luebbe placed 27th with her time of 24:28. Willard and Koste finished in 29th and 30th, respectively. Willard crossed the line four seconds ahead of Koste with her time of 24:31. Only 0:42 and 14 places separated Lehigh’s top five.

Freshmen Rob Hampson and Tyler Spencer were the top Lehigh finishers in the men’s race. Hampson ran the 8K course in 27:06 to finish in 29th, just one place ahead of Spencer, who completed the course in 27:09. Sophomore Mark Swanson was the third Mountain Hawk finisher with his time of 27:14, good for 32nd. A pair of Swanson’s classmates, Sam Kirk and Alex Hudgins, filled out the scoring contingent from Lehigh. Kirk placed 42nd in 27:35, while Hudgins followed in 44th with his time of 27:39. The men allowed only 15 places and 0:33 to separate the scorers.

American won both the men’s and women’s team titles. In the women’s race, the Eagles ended Bucknell’s four year run as league champion. American’s Samia Akbar was the women’s individual champion with a time of 21:53. Her counterpart in the men’s race was Bucknell’s Bryan Johnson as he ran a time of 25:43.

Lehigh returns to action on November 16 when the men and women compete at the NCAA District II Qualifier.
