BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh Athletics has announced that former track standout Justina Barone ’03 and Charlie Brown ‘77, a star on the basketball hardwood, have been elected to the Roger S. Penske/Lehigh Athletics Hall of Fame. The pair of former Lehigh greats will be formally inducted into the Hall of Fame on Saturday, May 9.
One of the greatest athletes in Lehigh history, Justina Barone set 20 school records during her time in the Brown and White and won seven Patriot League Championships, between indoor and outdoor track. Barone won the 2001, 2002 and 2003 Patriot League pentathlon championship, and was named the PL Field Athlete of the Meet on two occasions (2001, 2003) as well as the PL Track Athlete of the Meet twice (2002, 2003). A three-time captain of the track and field program, Barone was a seven time ECAC Qualifier and in 2003, became the first woman in Lehigh history to qualify for the USA Track and Field (USATF) Championship where she competed against a large pool of professional athletes en route to earning a 12th place finish in the combined events category.
Barone was named the ECAC and Patriot League Athlete of the Week on numerous occasions, earned the 2003 ECAC Merit Award, received the Lehigh Valley Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women Outstanding Athlete Award the same year, and was named the Most Outstanding Female Senior Athlete by the Lehigh Athletic Department. Barone graduated from Lehigh in 2003 with a bachelor’s degree in economics.
Lehigh’s all-time leading scorer at the time of his graduation, Charlie Brown finished his career with 1,311 points, which is currently 12th in school annals. A four-year letterwinner and 1977 team captain, Brown earned All-Tournament Team honors at the 1976-77 Roanoke Invitational and led the Brown and White in scoring as a freshman, sophomore and senior. Brown was named to the All-East Coast Conference Second Team in 1975 after averaging 14.0 points and 6.5 rebounds and shooting 46-percent from the field. He averaged 13.4 points over the course of his career, eclipsing the 1,000-point plateau on December 6, 1976.
Brown received a handful of awards during his time at Lehigh including the Chi Psi Award in 1975, the Walter J. Messner Award in 1976, the Bruce Thompson Award in 1977 and the North Jersey Alumni Association Outstanding Athlete Award in 1977. Brown earned his bachelor’s degree in economics from Lehigh in 1977.
