The second set gave the Mountain Hawks hope that they could rebound like they had on Friday night against Holy Cross. After falling in the opening frame by a narrow margin, 25-22, the Brown and White battled back for a 25-22 victory of its own. The momentum built in Grace Hall, but unlike the Crusaders the night before, the Black Knights would not allow Lehigh back into the match.
“We need to just take those to heart and run with them to turn them into match wins,” Maurer said. “We can compete in this league, but we’re not going to win consistently until we grow up a little bit.”
The Mountain Hawks record now stands at 5-9 (1-1), while the Black Knights improve to 13-2 (2-0) on the season.
For the second-consecutive game Maxie McCoy took on a starring role for Lehigh. After her 11 kills without a single error on Friday night, the junior came back with another nine kills and one error. While the Mountain Hawks hit just .039 on their attacks, McCoy hit .308 on the afternoon.
“She really stepped up big for us,” Maurer said. “She found ways to score and she did all the little things for us. She just had a huge weekend.”
Angelika Kopacz tied McCoy for the team-lead with nine kills on the match. Kopacz, Emma Melendez and Brittany Thurston all recorded more than 10 digs for the Mountain Hawks as they tried to repel the strong Army attack.
The Mountain Hawks were doomed by a series of errors in the final two sets. While they only made 11 attack errors in the first two frames, they made 11 in the third set alone. The Black Knights took advantage of the free points and ran away with a 25-15 set victory after the break.
The Black Knights, on the other hand, only got better on the attack as the match went on. They hit .379 in the final set, making only two errors. The 19 errors for the Mountain Hawks in the final two sets were too much to overcome, and they fell in the final frame 25-14
“We have a lot to learn,” Maurer said. “We know we haven’t arrived yet as the team that’s day in, day out, the same consistent team.”
Lehigh returns to action on Saturday, October 3, when it travels to
