Sweeney's shutout highlights split at Lafayette

EASTON, Pa. – Junior Lisa Sweeney fired a two-hit shutout, while striking out 13 to lead Lehigh to a 1-0 win over rival Lafayette in the first game of their doubleheader Saturday at Metzgar Fields. The Mountain Hawks had to settle for a split however, as Lafayette tagged sophomore Tiffany Curtis for seven runs in taking the nightcap 7-2. The game two setback snapped Lehigh’s 35 game winning streak over its arch rival, which dated back to 1999.

Lehigh (24-7, 5-1 Patriot League) only mustered three hits against Lafayette starter Ali Henry, but the visiting Mountain Hawks did put together a third inning rally to plate the game’s only run. Senior Megan Conrad reached on a bunt single, and moved to third on a single from classmate Kate Marvel. Junior Whitney Lowe followed with an RBI single, to give Lehigh the lead.

Sweeney took care of the rest, allowing just a second inning single to Kristen Ruckno and a seventh inning bunt single to Robyn Matchett. A seventh inning walk to Ruckno put the tying and winning runs on base, but Sweeney fanned Kasey Karr to end the game. Sweeney faced just two batters over the minimum and improved to 13-2 on the year with her fifth shutout of the season.

Karr extracted plenty of revenge for the Leopards (10-14, 3-3 PL) in game two, drilling a pair of home runs, while allowing just two runs and seven hits in the pitcher’s circle to earn her fifth victory of the season. Lafayette plated four runs in the bottom of the first inning on two-run home runs by Christina Giambrone and Karr. In the fourth, Karr added her second long ball off of Curtis, who allowed seven runs on seven hits in four and a third innings in a losing effort. Curtis falls to 10-5 with the loss, and suffers her first ever loss in a Patriot League regular season game.

Lafayette tacked on two more runs in the fifth on a two run double by Kerry Griffin. The Mountain Hawks had seven hits in the nightcap, including two from Marvel, but only managed two runs, which came on a sixth inning two run homer by junior Alisha Gonzales.

The Mountain Hawks and Leopards will wrap-up their four game series with a doubleheader on Sunday beginning at noon from Metzgar Fields.
