WEST POINT, N.Y. – Freshman Alex Cueva went 6-for-8 with four doubles to lead Lehigh to a doubleheader sweep of Army in the Patriot League opener for both teams Saturday at the Army Softball Complex. Cueva went 4-for-4 with three RBI to lead Lehigh to a 5-1 win in game one, while sophomore Tiffany Curtis tossed a four-hitter to lead the Mountain Hawks to a 4-0 win in the nightcap. With the sweep Lehigh improves to 21-4 overall (2-0 Patriot League), while the Black Knights fall to 4-22 (0-2 PL).

In game one, Lehigh raced out in front with four two-out runs in the top of the second inning. Freshman Carly Potock delivered the first run with an infield single which scored classmate Sam Miller. Two batters later Cueva doubled to center, scoring a two runs to make it 3-0 Lehigh. Junior Lisa Sweeney capped the scoring with a single to center, which scored Cueva.

Army starting pitcher Veronica Barth helped her own cause with an RBI single in the fourth inning to account for the Black Knights’ lone run. Lehigh however, added an insurance run in the sixth as Cueva’s third double of the game plated senior Kate Marvel.

Sweeney issued a season-high five walks, but allowed just a run on four hits while striking out ten to improve to 11-1 on the season. Barth falls to 2-10 allowing five runs on 13 Lehigh hits. Four Mountain Hawks registered multi-hit games with senior Taryn Hanley (two) joining Cueva (four), Marvel (two) and Miller (two).

Sweeney opened the scoring in game two with a third inning RBI single to center that scored Cueva, who reached on her fourth double of the day.

Lehigh added to its lead in the fourth when Jessi Muckleroy walked Miller, and then Potock drilled her first career home run to left, putting the Mountain Hawks in front 3-0. In the fifth, Cueva reached base again, with a single and came around to score on a one out single from junior Alisha Gonzales.

Curtis took care of the rest for the Mountain Hawks, going the distance on a four-hitter for her first shutout of the year. Curtis walked two and struck out four as she improves to 9-3. Nicole Talarczyk started in the circle for Army and took the loss, as she falls to 0-4.

The Mountain Hawks and Black Knights will wrap-up their four game series with two games on Sunday. First pitch for the doubleheader is set for 1 p.m. from the Army Softball Complex and both games will be broadcast live on Lehighsports.com with streaming audio powered by Yahoo! Sports.
