WILMINGTON, N.C. – A pair of phenomenal pitching performances led Lehigh to two season-opening victories Saturday at the Seahawk Classic at Boseman Field. Junior Lisa Sweeney tossed a one-hit shutout, striking out a career high 16 to lead the Mountain Hawks over Charleston Southern 5-0 in Saturday’s first game. Sophomore Tiffany Curtis followed with a one-hit 13 strikeout performance as Lehigh downed host UNC-Wilmington 7-1 to improve to 2-0 on the season.

Sweeney was brilliant in the season’s opening game, allowing just a second inning single to Ashley Conway and a seventh inning walk to Lisa Rice. Offensively the Mountain Hawks scored all five of their runs in the third inning. The rally started with a one-out infield single from junior Ali Torborg. Senior Kate Marvel drove in the game’s opening run with a double to left centerfield, and then came around to score as junior Whitney Lowe followed with a double of her own to right. Freshman Alex Cueva then singled through the right side to drive in Lowe to make it 3-0. Lehigh’s final two runs scored on an infield single by senior Taryn Hanley.

The Mountain Hawks finished with eight base hits in the ballgame, including two from Sweeney. Jamie Wellons allowed four runs in two and a third innings to take the loss for Charleston Southern (2-4).

In game two, Lehigh tagged Seahawk starter Amanda Aditays for five two-out runs in the first inning en route to its second win of the day. Sweeney, starting in left field, drove in sophomore Amy Piccinich with a single to put Lehigh on the scoreboard. Hanley then followed with a bases loaded two-run single, Senior Megan Conrad brought home junior Alisha Gonzales with a single up the middle. A bases loaded walk to Marvel made it 5-0 Mountain Hawks before the Seahawks came to bat.

Lehigh extended its lead in the third inning on a leadoff homerun by Gonzales, and tacked on a seventh run in the sixth inning when Cueva scored on a single from freshman Mickey LaValley.

In the circle, Curtis struck out a career-best 13, while allowing just a fifth inning single to Paige Wakefield. UNC-Wilmington scored its only run on a third inning passed ball.

Marvel, Hanley and freshman Carly Potock each ripped two hits in the nightcap for the Brown and White.

The Mountain Hawks will wrap up play at the Seahawk Classic with two games on Sunday. Lehigh will face Delaware State at 9 a.m., before wrapping up tournament play against UNC-Greensboro at 11 a.m.
