Lehigh wraps up trip with 3-0 win over Holy Cross

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Lehigh women’s volleyball team completed a clean sweep of Holy Cross on Saturday, winning in three sets, to improve to 7-13 (3-4) on the season. The Mountain Hawks also completed the season sweep of the Crusaders after taking both home and road matches against Holy Cross.

“We didn’t let up,” head coach Jenny Maurer said. “We made our statement and we kept our lead. We didn’t really let them come too close to us.”

Angelika Kopacz led the team with 13 kills, making just one error in the three sets. Her .600 hitting percentage led the Mountain Hawks as well. Kopacz failed to register a double-double for the first time in four matches, as she totaled just five digs in the match. However, Kopacz’ 13 serve receptions, while not counting as official digs, helped Lehigh on the defensive end as well.

The Mountain Hawks jumped out to the early lead with a 25-22 win in the first set. After dropping three straight sets to Army in West Point, N.Y. on Friday, the Mountain Hawks carried the momentum from that first set all the way through the match.

The second set was where Lehigh exerted its dominance over the Crusaders. The Mountain Hawks hit .480 in the set, knocking down 14 kills and making only two errors. It was the type of clean set Maurer is always hoping her team can put together.

“We knew what to expect from Holy Cross, but we just kept the focus on ourselves,” Maurer said. “We were just worrying about what was happening on our side of the net.”

Overall the Mountain Hawks hit .266 from the floor, making 38 kills and only 13 errors in the three sets. Jessica Kudirka registered her second-consecutive double-double for the Brown and White, as she put up 19 assists and 17 digs.

“I would say, for the most part, we continued to build off of yesterday (against Army) throughout the entire match,” Maurer said. “In addition to continuing to serve and receive well, our transition was very good at converting from defense to offense.”

Lehigh returns to action on Tuesday, when the Mountain Hawks host La Salle at Leeman-Turner Arena.
