Swim teams roll past Providence in opening meet

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – It was a dominant opening performance for the Lehigh and swimming and diving teams, which won the first 22 events and rolled to a pair of wins over Providence, Saturday evening at Taylor Natatorium. The Mountain Hawk men rolled to a 155-80 victory, while the women prevailed by an equally impressive 151-72 score, earning a victory in its season opener after going winless in dual competition a year ago.

 

Lehigh established such a comfortable lead that the Mountain Hawks swam did not score their swimmers in the final four events of the of the 26 event meet.

 

Junior Kevin McGrath paced the Lehigh men with wins in the 200 individual medley and the 400 freestyle. Senior Dan Johnson led a 1-2-3 Lehigh finish in the 50 meter freestyle with a time of 24.17 second. The Mountain Hawks also claimed the top three spots in the 100 meter butterfly, with junior Ben Dearden leading the sweep. In the diving events, senior Mac Tichner won the one meter, while freshman Ryan Helfrich took top honors in the three meter.

 

On the women’s side, sophomore Lauren Kindrick and freshman Priscilla Barletta won two individual events apiece. Kindrick won the 800 meter freestyle in 9:28.02 and took the 400 free as well. Barletta won her first collegiate race, the 200 meter freestyle and then led the charge in the 100 fly, where the Mountain Hawks earned the top three spots. On the diving boards, junior Erin Tormey swept the one and three meter events.

 

The Mountain Hawks will be back in the pool on Sunday when they travel to Worcester, Massachusetts for their first Patriot League meet against Holy Cross. Action gets underway at noon.
