Lehigh concludes trip with sweep of Holy Cross

WORCESTER, Mass. – Twenty four hours after a pair of convincing season-opening victories, the Mountain Hawks were back in the pool, getting their first look at Patriot League opposition this season. Lehigh showed few signs of fatigue and coasted to a pair of victories over Holy Cross Sunday afternoon at the Hart Center Pool. The Lehigh men captured all 11 swimming events in a 183-60 victory over the Crusaders, while the women won 11 of 13 events in a 172-69 triumph. Both Mountain Hawk teams return home at 2-0 on the dual season.
“It was a really long weekend and a really tiring one for our team,” said Lehigh head coach Rob Herb. “I’m pretty happy with our results. We had a lot of young swimmers out there and a lot of first time event winners. That should help build some confidence as we move forward.”
The Lehigh men swept the top three spots in seven different events, with three Mountain Hawks winning two events apiece on the afternoon. Senior Dan Johnson continued to look strong in the sprints, winning the 50 yard freestyle in 22.06 seconds and the 100 free in 47.97. Freshman Chris Toth swept the distance events, capturing the 1000 free in 10:07.52 and the 500 free, with a time of 4:55.76. Junior Kevin McGrath capped a strong weekend by leading a Lehigh top-three sweep in the 200 Individual Medley, and added a win in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:13.22.
On the women’s side, sophomore Lauren Kindrick picked up wins in the mid-distance events, winning the 200 free in 2:00.67 and the 500 free in 5:19.04. Junior Allison Rolish finished second to Kindrick in the 500 free, and won the 1000 free with a time of 10:57.02. Junior Laura Eull lead a Lehigh sweep in the 200 yard backstroke, touching the wall in 2:21.95. Freshmen Priscilla Barletta and Paola Simon picked up wins in the 200 IM and 100 free respectively and teamed with Eull and senior Melanie Rolish to win the 400 medley relay. On the diving boards, junior Erin Tormey won the women’s one-meter with a score of 197.16.
The Mountain Hawks will return to the pool on Saturday when they host their first home meet of the season against West Chester. Action gets underway at 10:30 a.m. with diving at Jacobs Pool. Swimming action will follow at 1 p.m.
