“You have to credit Colgate, they did a great job,” said Lehigh head coach Fran Troyan. “I thought we played a great game as well, but they seemed to catch every break. Lisa Sweeney pitched a great game, and offensively we had a number of line drives that became outs.”
The game’s lone run came in the bottom of the second inning when Colgate, the designated home team, capitalized on a leadoff double from LaPorsha Albert and two well placed bunts. Kim Spinks sacrificed to Albert to third, and then Vicky Ortengren dropped a squeeze bunt and the flip to the plate from junior Taryn Hanley was not in time to get the speedy Albert.
Nordstrom worked around base runners in the second, fourth and sixth innings inducing 17 fly ball outs. In the fourth inning, Lehigh had runners on first and second with two outs after senior Lauren Haney walked and sophomore Alisha Gonzales hit an infield single up the middle. Senior Whitney Schenbeck followed with a hard line drive to centerfield that Calla Yee caught to end the threat.
In the sixth inning, junior Kate Marvel led off with a single for Lehigh. After showing bunt, sophomore Whitney Lowe swung away and hit a line drive to the right side that Raider second baseman Kortney Hannah caught out of the air. Hannah then raced to first to complete the double play and end the threat.
Nordstrom allowed just two hits while walking one and recording one strikeout, as she improves to 17-7 on the season. The Patriot League tournament MVP, Nordstrom did not allow an earned run versus Lehigh in 21 innings of work versus the Mountain Hawks this season.
Sweeney was dealt the hard luck loss allowing just the double to Albert in six innings, while striking out five. She falls to 19-7 on the year. Sweeney, Marvel and freshman Tiffany Curtis were the three Mountain Hawks named to the All-Tournament team.
Colgate (25-22) moves on to the NCAA Regionals, which begin next weekend at campus sites to be determined.
The Mountain Hawks will lose seven seniors from a team that had made three straight NCAA appearances, but Lehigh does return four All-Patriot League selections, including the Player of the Year (Marvel) and the Pitcher of the Year (Sweeney).
