Mountain Hawks sweep doubleheader at Penn

Lehigh scored four runs in the third inning to take the lead in game one. Sophomore Kristyn Kubiak opened the scoring, coming home on a wild pitch. Two batters later, Hamasaki delivered a three-run double to left field to put the Brown and White up 4-0.
After Penn scored its two runs in the bottom of the fourth on a home run by Brandi King, Lehigh added two in the fifth on an RBI groundout from Sterrett and a single from junior Taryn Hanley. Hamasaki tacked on Lehigh’s final run with an RBI single in the seventh, which scored senior Whitney Schenbeck.
The Mountain Hawks pounded out ten hits in the opener, led by Schenbeck, who was 3-for-3 with a double.
Sophomore Lisa Sweeney went the distance in the circle, allowing two runs on four hits, while striking out seven, to improve to 7-3 on the season.
Lehigh continued its recent hot hitting in game two, jumping out to a 5-0 lead after two and a half innings. Lauren Haney drove home Lehigh’s first run with an RBI single in the first, a hit which extended her hitting streak to 11 straight games. Hanley added a two-run single to make it 3-0 after one.
In the third Sterrett belted her second home run of the season, a two run shot, to make it 5-0.
Penn came back with a run in the bottom of the third, and four more in the fifth, on a grand slam by Kaelin Ainley to tie the game at five.
Gonzales however, provided the game winning runs, with a one-out three-run blast – her first career round-tripper in the sixth inning.
The Quakers scored one more run off of Lehigh freshman Tiffany Curtis in the sixth inning, but Sweeney came out of the bullpen in the seventh, retiring the side in order to earn the save.
Curtis improved to 3-6 on the year, allowing six runs (just two earned) on 11 hits while striking out six in six innings of work.
The Mountain Hawks will return to the diamond on Saturday when they open up league play with a doubleheader against Army. The first two games of the four-game series are set for noon from Lehigh’s Kaufman Field.
