Lehigh's Craig denied All-American honors

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. – Lehigh’s 2006-07 season came to an end Friday evening as freshman David Craig lost his consolation round match to Alex Clemsen of Edinboro 6-2 at the 77th NCAA Championships at the Palace of Auburn Hills. Craig needed the victory to secure All-American honors, but with the loss, the last remaining Mountain Hawk grappler was eliminated from the tournament. Lehigh finishes with 10 team points, and failed to earn an All-American medal for the first time since 1996.

“We knew that without any seeded wrestlers, the only way to become All-Americans was to upset seeded wrestlers,” said head coach Greg Strobel. “We’ve had unseeded guys go on to become All-Americans before, but this year it just seemed that we had some unfortunate draws, and our guys lost some close matches to some really good kids”

Craig was looking to avenge a tiebreaker loss on riding time against Clemsen earlier in the season. The Lehigh freshman took all the shots in the rematch, but the No. 7 seed Clemsen was able to counter and spin behind for takedowns in the first and second periods, adding an escape and riding time to deny Craig All-American honors. Craig’s freshman campaign wraps up at 31-11.

The Mountain Hawks qualified seven wrestlers for the NCAA Championships, but only mustered 10 team points, their lowest total since 1996, Strobel’s first season.

In the team race, Iowa State placed three wrestlers in the finals to power past Minnesota into first place. The Golden Gophers have just one finalist and trail the Cyclones by 3.5 points, with Missouri, Oklahoma State and Northwestern rounding out the top five. Lehigh enters the final day of the tournament tied for 38th place.

The 77th NCAA Championships will conclude with two sessions on Saturday. The morning session, featuring consolation semifinals and medal rounds gets underway at 10:00 am and will be televised on ESPNU (DirecTV 609). The championship finals will begin at 8:00 pm and will be televised on ESPN.
