LEWISBURG, Pa. – Day one is complete at the 2007 Patriot League swimming and diving championships at Bucknell’s Kinney Natatorium. The first eleven events were contested Friday after the opening of the championships was delayed a day by inclement weather. Lehigh’s men had a strong opening day and sit in third place with 137 points. The Mountain Hawk women sit in seventh place but did manage some positives on the day.

The day’s most impressive performance from day one came from the women’s 400 yard medley relay team. The team consisting of seniors Betsy Balaguer and Julie Mitchell, sophomore Melanie Rolish and freshman Julie Sicherman achieved their goal and set a new school record with a time of 3:53.35, good for third place.

Individually, Balaguer posted the highest finish for the women, placing seventh in the 500 free with a time of 5:07.86.

In consolation finals, freshman Allison Rolish placed eleventh in the 500 free; Mitchell and freshman Anne Rodriguez placed 14th and 15th respectively in the 200 IM and senior Kate Paine placed 14th in the 50 yard free.

The women’s 200 free relay team placed seventh with a time of 1:40.78

The highest men’s finishes on the day came from senior Tom Gilbert and freshman Dan Johnson. Gilbert took fourth in the 200 IM with a time of 1:52.84. Freshman Kevin McGrath placed eighth in the same event, securing a time of 1:56.49.

Johnson missed the school record in the 50 free by a tenth of a second, but managed to place fourth with a time of 20.83.

Junior Clark Cohen placed fifth in the men’s three meter diving event, while both the 200 free relay and 400 medley relay teams swam to third place finishes.

Navy set the pace on day one, as the Midshipmen lead both the men’s and women’s team standings. The Lehigh men are 82 points behind second place Army and four points ahead of fourth place Bucknell.
