LEWISBURG, Pa. – Sophomore Melanie Rolish broke her own school record in the 100 yard breaststroke and senior Tom Gilbert and sophomore Dan Johnson earned second place finishes to highlight the Mountain Hawks’ second day of competition at the Patriot League swimming and diving championships at Bucknell’s Kinney Natatorium. The Lehigh men currently sit in fourth place after 26 events, while the women moved into fifth place with one day of competition remaining.

Rolish broke her own record in the preliminaries earlier in the day, then did so again in the finals. Her time of 1:04.33 was good for third place in the event, and shaved over a second off her previous high mark. The Cherry Hill, New Jersey native added a sixth place finish in the 400 yard individual medley with a time of 4:34.21.

Freshman Julie Sicherman and senior Julie Mitchell also qualified for championship finals on day two. Sicherman placed fourth in the 100 yard butterfly, with a time of 57.78, while Mitchell took sixth in the 100 back with a time of 58.79.

The quartet of Mitchell, Rolish, Sicherman and senior Betsy Balaguer placed fifth in the 200 medley relay, while Lehigh’s 800 yard free relay team took seventh place.

Johnson and Gilbert delivered the highest individual finishes for the Mountain Hawks at these championships so far. Johnson took silver in the 200 freestyle, finishing with a time of 1:41.32, nearly three seconds behind the winner, Army’s Efri Ruthenberg, who ran away with the event.

Gilbert’s time of 50.38 was good for second place in the 100 back.

In other men’s action, junior Jonathan Kearney placed fifth in the 100 fly with a time of 51.25. Freshman Kevin McGrath won the consolation final in the 400 IM, with a time of 4:06.87, good for ninth place overall. The Mountain Hawks also placed third in the 200 medley relay and fourth in the 800 free relay.

Navy continues to control the team race on both the men’s and women’s side. Lehigh’s men dropped one spot to fourth with 282 points, and trail third place Bucknell by 52 points. The Mountain Hawk women climbed two spots to fifth, with 232 points, 17.5 behind fourth place Army.
