Lehigh meets Fordham in league opener Saturday

10/2/2007 12:00:00 AM | Football

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Lehigh heads to the Bronx on Saturday afternoon to open up its 2007 Patriot League schedule versus the Rams of Fordham at Jack Coffey Field.  The Mountain Hawks are fresh off of an exhilarating last-second victory over Harvard last weekend at home, in which junior defensive lineman Paul Bode scooped up a fumble and rumbled 27-yards for the winning score with just 30 seconds left on the clock.  The Rams meanwhile, opened league play last weekend and won in dramatic fashion of their own, as they stormed back from a 24-13 halftime deficit to defeat Colgate 27-24 in Hamilton, New York.  Lehigh has not opened league play versus Fordham since 1999 when the Brown and White raced past the Rams 49-7 in the Bronx.

The Rams enter this weekend’s game fresh off of a 27-24 come-from-behind victory over Colgate last weekend in Hamilton, New York, which was just the third Rams win against the Raiders in 18 tries and their first win in a league opener since 2004.  Quarterback John Skelton threw for 217 yards and three touchdowns and added 69 yards rushing to go along with one score, while the Fordham “D” limited Colgate to just seven points in the second half.  The Rams feature a strong running attack, featuring senior Jonte Coven (76 carries, 398 yards) and freshman Xavier Martin (48 carries, 247 yards), while the defense is led by the play of Matt Loucks (43 total tackles) whose 26-tackle effort in a win over Albany last month is the single highest tackle total in the country this season.

Lehigh has had no problem getting in gear at the beginning of games this season, outscoring its opponents 40-17 in the first quarter and 33-9 in the second quarter (73-26 total).  On the flip side, the Mountain Hawks have been outscored 21-9 in the third quarter and they have outscored their opponents by just four points in the final 15 minutes, 27-23.  Not surprising is the fact that Sedale Threatt’s passer rating in the first half this season is 122.38, as compared to 105.96 in the second.

Saturday’s game kicks off at 1:00 from Jack Coffey Field.  The game will not be televised, but fans can listen to the contest on ESPN Radio 1230 and 1320 AM as well as around the world on Lehighsports.com with streaming audio powered by Yahoo! Sports.
