Mountain Hawks downed by Navy 26-12

1/13/2007 12:00:00 AM | Men's Wrestling

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – No. 25 Navy won seven of ten bouts, scoring bonus points in three in a 26-12 victory over No. 23 Lehigh Saturday night at Halsey Field House. The Mountain Hawks started strong, with wins by major decision in two of the first three bouts, but Navy ran off five straight wins over a shorthanded Lehigh team to hand the Mountain Hawks their first loss to the Mids since 1996. Lehigh drops to 8-6 with the loss, while the Midshipmen improve to 6-4.

Sophomore Matt Fisk gave the Mountain Hawks a quick 4-0 lead, scoring an early takedown and two first period near falls to build a 6-0 lead, and went on to defeat Alex Usztics by major decision 10-2.

After ninth-ranked Joe Baker won a 9-2 decision over Seth Ciasulli, senior Matt Ciasulli picked up Lehigh’s second win by major decision to give Lehigh an 8-3 lead. Ciasulli led Brad Canterbury 3-2 with 30 seconds to go, but scored a two point near fall from neutral, then a takedown and three point near fall to earn the 11-3 major decision.

From there Navy went on its run, winning close matches by decision at 149 and 157, then pulling away with Justin Jacobs earning a 21-7 decision over Lehigh’s Manuel Schubert at 165 and a pair of major decisions at 174 and 184.

Lehigh needed back-to-back falls to force a tie and bumped freshman David Craig up a weight class to wrestle Tyler Moyer at 197. Craig was sharp, building an early lead, but a third period cradle resulted in near-fall points instead of a pin and Craig had to settle for a 13-1 major decision.

At heavyweight, senior Paul Weibel scored the first takedown versus tenth ranked Ed Prendergast, but was quickly reversed and caught on his back and pinned at the 1:26 mark.

The loss was just the second dual loss to an EIWA opponent since the start of the 2002-03 season.

The Mountain Hawks will return to the mats on Friday night, when they return home for the first time since early December to meet the No. 13 Cornell Big Red. The match gets underway at 7:00 pm from Stabler Arena. For tickets, call 610-7LU-GAME or visit the Lehigh ticket office, located in Grace Hall, during normal business hours.

On Wednesday, January 17, fans are invited to meet Lehigh head coach Greg Strobel and select student-athletes at the monthly Lehigh wrestling luncheon.  The event will take place at Starters Restaurant on Route 378 in Bethlehem and will begin at 12:00 p.m., running until 1:00.  Coach Strobel and members of the team in attendance will field questions from fans and alumni.  Cost of the all-you-can-eat buffet is $11.  The event will also be streamed on lehighsports.com later that afternoon, for those who cannot make it to Starters.
